So I finally broke down and called the doctor today - you never get to speak with anyone right away, you have to leave a message on their answering service. I did, and got a call back saying that they won't prescribe me anything for my UTI over the phone - they must have a urine sample to send to the lab. NO EXCEPTIONS. And they are only open until 4 pm today. The oh-so-nice nurse suggested that I go to urgent care if I couldn't make it in before then. Are these people crazy! Gee, can't come into the doctor because it's going to cost me $70 + prescription b/c my insurance sucks ass, but I'll get my tail right on down to urgent care for $150 no problem!
I know it's not the nurses fault but man it really pissed me off! WTF else do they think it would be?!?

i guess that's usually standard. but come on!! hasn't that lady ever been in pain?? when i read your first post, like crystal said, i literally felt your pain. aghhh! i'm sorry for you. maybe you can call back and see if they can prescribe you, and then you can come in later to give the sample?...when you can actually make it in. i've done that before. also, when i was out of town with an ear infection, i went to clinic place (not a shady one) and i had to pay $80 up front, then i just had to pay for the prescription after the doctor checked me out. $80 is cheaper than $150. maybe look into going to a clinic (their hours might be better too). i'm so sorry!! i would also think about going to a different doctor. if you have been to the doctor before, they should be able to prescribe you something like that over the phone.

You'd think she'd sympathize, huh? I mean, I can't even think of anything else it could be that wouldnt' require antibiotics anyway...?
I've been in there before, so it's not like I was someone they'd never heard of calling and asking for a prescription. Their hours bite anyway, open 9-12 and 1:30 to 4, so I wouldn't be able to go in without taking almost 2 hours off of work. I would switch docs, but we're moving in two weeks so it would be a moot point.
My plan is to get some cranberry pills and more cranberry juice at the grocery store tomorrow and continue to drink as much water as I can stomach. If I still have symptoms on Monday, I'll just go in on Tuesday anyway.
Thanks for the advice and commiseration !

Hope that helps! In the meantime CVS has these pills (it's their brand) I forget the exact name but it says something about easing UTI symptoms It works like a dream...and only takes about 20 minutes to work. The packaging is purple and white.
the last time i had a UTI i called the drs. office and begged and pleaded and cried and finally they relented and sent in a prescription! i have quite the flair for dramatics and (shoot me if i sound smug) usually get my way when i beg for things from people...
keep on begging and pleading and crying your case... if you have had them before you know what they are- and there is no reason why they should prescribe you something!
i'm sure you've dealt with the problem by now, but for future reference, if you go to a good health food store you can get a something for it. i cannot remember the exact brand, but there are "urninary support" or "urinary ease" tinctures (come in those little bottles with the dropper top). look for one that has buchu root and marshmallow in it. its nasty stuff -- the buchu smells like cat pee -- but it works if you take it early enough.
another one that an herbalist recommended to me is "cranstat extra" by vitanica. i bought some and have not needed it yet, but this one is pills so they're not smelly and it has cranberry extract, buchu, marshmallow and a couple other things.

Got myself some cranberry pills on Saturday and have been taking them since then - huge difference! I think I headed it off at the pass so to speak, so I was able to get to it before it really got to me. All better now .
Thanks for your advice too - it's nice to know we have a nurse around here! If I hadn't practically drowned myself in water the first couple days, it probably would have gotten alot worse.

Glad to hear you are feeling a little better. This post made me think how grateful I am for the internet in times when the doctors office is closed, there is so much information available for home remedies (although you have to be skeptical and careful) and much of them are safe and non-toxic.
