Shopping in Chicago - Tips Please!

The Mag Mile is Michigan Ave which has a ton of stores, and Water Tower Mall, but not really your boutique stores, basically it's all the major chain stores, but worth checking out.

For good boutique shopping go to Halsted and Armitage Ave. They have a ton of great stores and it's a mixture of chain and lots of boutiques. Another good area is on Southport. There are a bunch of good boutiques on Southport just south of Addison. I'd highly recommend Krista K on Southport. On Armitage - you have to go to Active Endeavors!

i don't think you necessarily have to rent a car (more money for shopping). public transportation is chicago is great. you can take the train to the airport and all the shopping areas that shopchicago33 mentioned (i live right by the southport area and i second krista k, redhead boutique, sheone, jake, etc...).

also, i would stop at lori's which is in lincoln park. lori's is located on armitage (right by the train). lori's has the best shoes. i also like art effect on armitage. armitage intersects with halsted which has bcbg, bebe, lucky brand, arden b, banana, barney's co-op and a ton of smaller boutiques).

if you do have a car, i would head to highland park/evanston area for shopping if you have time. it's farther away, and not necessarily worth the drive if you don't have time. if you have time, go for it. there's some great stores like another active endeavors and e street denim.

one more thought...state street has great shopping. it's downtown near the magnificent mile. filene's basement, t.j. maxx (i always find shoes there), nordstrom rack, and a HUGE marshall fields (which is similar to a bloomingdales).

my plan would be michigan ave. walk to the state street area (or take a train or taxi). then the next day i would go to the lincoln park area then go a mile north to the southport area. remember, the boutiques aren't open as late as the michigan ave. stores. so you might want to do the boutiques earlier then do michigan ave. at the end of the day (if you still have energy).
