Funeral attire

My uncle passed away and the funeral is this weekend.
Mind you, I have a lot of black dresses...
But apparently people aren't wearing black to funerals anymore???
I'm confused.  What SHOULD I be wearing?

Leah, I am so sorry. I know you and your family will make it through, but in the meantime, I'll be thinking of you and sending good vibes your way!

As far as the funeral goes...I still always wear black to funerals, although I have seen more people wearing navy and brown. Although there may be some people who aren't wearing black, I definitely don't think you can go wrong with it.

Yeah - just wear black or a lot of some other dark, respectful color.  The idea is to call out no attention to yourself.  As we all know, a funeral is neither the time nor the place.

I think the reason someone would bring up the initial conversation of wearing black at a funeral is (1) in response to those who don't like to wear black (yes - you can just wear some other dark color), and (2) if someone has nothing better to do than to just mix things up.

I am not directing my comments at you, Leah.  I'm talking about those who make people wonder whether or not they should wear black to a funeral.

Thanks gals...I was concerned in general because his sister (my mother) is wearing brown and off white, his daughter is wearing red, etc...
I just wasn't sure if I should still wear black

I think that as long as you dress with respect to the occasion, you can certainly wear other dark colors to a funeral. However, I don't think you can go wrong with wearing black. You certainly shouldn't be made to feel self conscious wearing it.

I'm sorry for your loss. My sympathies to you and your family.

Honestly this kind of surprises me. I would never dream of wearing red to a funeral unless the garment had sentimental value connected with the person who has passed (if that person had given me the red dress, etc)

Sometimes people make an effort to wear the deceased's favorite color - I've been to funerals where there was a lot of red pink or blue in the crowd. It's possible some people think black is depressing so they intentionally avoid it, but I find people to generally be rather uncritical of what everyone is wearing at occasions like this.

Since I'm not a big dress person I generally wear black slacks and a gray sweater set or gray blouse, or something along those lines...but I wear black all the time so I'm a bad example.
