My Pants Are Too Big!
Permalink Closed

I bought a pair of Editors from Express a while back in a size 4. They're huge!  I don't know why because I have plenty of other Editors in size 4 that fit me.  A size 2 is now too small on me.  I need to shrink them, but they are dry clean only, so I can't wash them and put them in the dryer, can I?  Does anyone have any idea how I can get these to fit better?  TIA!

Haha

Do I just ask them to take them in?  Not only are they too big in the waist, but they are too big in the thighs and butt as well..can a tailor fix that?

I had a tailor a couple of times reconstruct a whole pair of shorts for me. So i would assume they could fix pants.

Absolutely.  A good tailor can completely reconstruct an item -for the right price.

For extensive tailoring with a really good tailor (not my dry cleaner) it costs about $40 to
$50.

I think if they didn't cost too much to begin with then it would be worthwhile to take them to a trusted dry cleaner for  the alterations.  My dry cleaner doesn't just take in the waist, but will take in the back seem or the side seems, if needs be; I never had the thighs or extensive work done, but with this particular dry cleaner I bet they could do that too (I have dealt with other dry cleaners whose tailoring was not so great, but passable).  It costs any where from $10 to $20 for work done at my dry cleaners.

A good tailor can take in anything...I had a dress that needed to be taken in two sizes and my tailor did an awesome job, but it was pricey ($40. It's definitely worth a shot if the pants are unique and you can't find them again.

If all else fails you could always embrace them as slouchy weekend pants.

The pants are far from unique - the are black, Express Editors that I wear to work a lot.  They cost about $70, so I don't know if it's worth it, but I'm afraid if I try to go buy another pair, i'll have the same issue.

Hmmm...I personally don't think they're worth $30-$40 tailoring then. I would just hit up TJ Maxx or Marshalls and get a new pair. When I need black pants I buy Editors from there for like $15 and I buy them on the tight side so that when they stretch I can still wear them in a kinda slouchy way.

I think I'll just go Express and try on another size 4 - if all my other size 4's fit from there, it must just be this particular pair that's running big.  Sometimes two different pairs of pants, in the same size can fit totally different.  I can't go down to a size 2 for a tighter fit because they don't fit.

Thanks girls!

IMO these pants don't garner the cost of getting them altered so extensively.  If I were you, I would take them into Express and explain the situation and they should exchange you a new one that should fit.  If you have had several of them, and this one is so inconsistent, then I'd chalk it up to a manufacturer's defect.  They should be happy to exchange the same thing.  You probably have to try on like all of the ones they have to find a good fit.

Do you really think that they will exchange pants that I've worn several times, have had dry cleaned, and don't have the tags or receipt to?  I'd love to try, but just figured this wasn't an option?
