summer law internships - update

Thanks guys - *I got a great job for the summer workign with police and prosecutors, and will have enough hours to get credit for school (so easy load next semester) I'm super excited!

Hey - Bluebirde and Esquiress and any other law school survivors on this board. What did y'all do for the summer after your first year? Most of my friends are at the public defenders's office or the prosecutor (except the brains who found real jobs - one even has a living stipend to work at some chemical company in NJ) Anyway, I'm interested in land use law, and I planned to work this summer at a nonprofit where I used to volunteer. But um, the week before finals started I found out my ex started a job ACROSS THE STREET. And I didn't think I could handle it. Am I being silly? Career services wants to help, and they were great with all my friends who came to them SOONER, but there's not much they can do for 1Ls at the last minute. Any ideas? What did y'all do for the first summer?

the first summer i was a research asst. for my property professor, i helped her write an article and prepared the syllabus for a class she taught in the fall.  i loved her and it was the beginning of an awesome friendship.  the pay was decent too, $25 an hour i think?  but the best part was i kept track of my own hours and she said 'be liberal'...so i was

the second summer i was a summer associate at a firm, remember feeling soo lucky since the economy tanked (the first day of on campus interviews was 9/11, can you believe i had to get through six interviews that day?  ).

anyway, i think the second summer matters much more than the first in terms of getting a job after graduation (unless you want to clerk, which is what i did, in which case apply early, like next fall) so i wouldn't sweat the summer too much at this stage--just work somewhere that looks good on your resume.

The summer between my first and second years of law school I did a research externship for a professor at my school and then headed off to Madrid for a study abroad summer program in international law.  I think that summer was one of the best experiences of my life.   I wanted to do an internship at an IP firm but things didn't work out.  :(  I think that esquiress and I must be close in terms of when we graduated from law school.  9/11 happened in the middle of my recruiting cycle too. *shudder*

Not that I really know anything more than you, but I just finished my first year too. I'm spending the first 1/2 of the summer doing summer school and also working on a reasearch project for one of the University's departments related to consumer fraud and old people. I'm not interested in elder law but I figured doing the research will look good on my resume. The second 1/2 of the summer I'm continuing the research and also working for a federal judge. I really don't know what I'm doing work-wise for the judge... my uncle hooked me up with the him, who's his patient.  But that will also be a good resume builder.
