Our car is totalled
Permalink Closed

so Sunday we were stopped at a red light and some idiot driving a construction truck "didn't see us" and smashed our little Hyundai up. Just got official word that the insurance company is totalling it. Yeah. So not cool...

So, looks like we are in the market for a new car. Any suggestions? We were thinking maybe a Ford Escape Hybrid, but the payments on that would be kind of high. We don't really feel very safe anymore driving in DC in a little car, since almost everyone here has an SUV...any ideas on sturdy cars in the under 25,000 range?

We have a Subaru that we have been extrememly happy with.  No mechanical problems AT ALL at almost 150,000 miles and 7 years old, as they are built to go around 400,000.  The all-wheel drive is a godsend in the winter as well, and we just keep our all-season tires on it throughout the year.  Good gas mileage.  I feel very safe in it.  We are actually getting a new one as soon as we move next month - the brand new ones are really reasonable all things considered.  We have the '98 version of this:

the Outback Sport - brand new starting at $18,995

And we are going to be getting this:

the Outback 2.5 XT - brand new starting at $28,095

Sorry to hear about your accident!  Hope everyone is alright!

I'll be looking for a car in december.  I didn't think the escape hybrids were that bad - I though under 25 or right around it.  I might be wrong though.  I really like the accords so I'm definetly going to test drive one of them.  My mom has the acura version and its really nice.  The hybrid version is over 25 if you want a hybrid.

LMonet- my boss just recommended the Subaru too...it looks pretty nice. I think I'll convince him to check it out. (I don't really get much say when it comes to the car, but I am usually prety good at convincing him of what he likes

The escape hybrid is just over 28...manageable but it would be really tight becuase with his credit score he won't get a good interest rate. I like the accords, but he refuses to buy a Honda for some reason (men, who knows?)

He just called back and now he's looking at the Escape non-hybrid and a Prius. I think the hybrid idea is appealing to him right now beacuse gas is so freaking expensive.

Has he actually test drove one yet?  I really wanted one too, but FH test drove a few and found them to be pretty gutless.  If you want one, I would go for something that has more horsepower than a Prius/Civic hybrid.  If you don't want one, encourage hubby to drive the Prius and then remark on the lack of power . . . !

I'm assuming noone was hurt.  Just wanted to say that I am glad everyone is ok.

Don't feel bad about the car being totaled.  You are way better off that way.  Too many people I know had cars repaired that should have been totaled and they had nothing but problems with the cars from then on.  At least this way you get a new car.

I think the hybrid really only helps with interstate driving and not city driving.  It'll help but not as much as he thinks.  I know you can get a $2000 tax credit if you get a new hybrid before 2007 (IRS website - search for Clean Fuel).  I think they are working in Congress to get the credit up to $4000.

Who is the car for?? You or him??

I wonder why he'd buy a ford over a honda? I would do the opposite.  never know with guys and their cars though.  The bf loves nissan and wants to resurrect his '93 sentra from the grave and he hates honda too... I don't get it at all hondas are so much cooler...

My Jetta was totaled a few years ago and I still have wrist pains from the accident.  *sigh* anyway, that car was my baby, so I thought it was absolutely terrible that I'd have to replace it with a boring Honda Civic (parents idea).  well, what i realized, is that 1) cars are just cars 2) reliability and safety will always be more important to me than coolness factor.  I think $25,000 is wayyy more than enough to find a decent replacement.  I only had $6,000 to work with and I think I found a great car.  At least you can count on Toyotas and Hondas, my VW was constantly breaking down and it only had 70,000 miles on it.  I would suggest going to a certified used Honda or Toyota dealership- while you may pay more than you would buying from an individual, the peace of mind is worth it (I have a realllly sketchy story that I wont get into- basically it involved me finalizing papers on a car from someone in a Taco Bell, turned out the car had been totaled, and we had to run to the bank to stop the check..)  My mom has a Toyota Sienna that she loves and my dad has a Honda CRV.  My bf has a Toyota Matrix.  All these cars are great cars and if you buy one that is practically brand new but not quite, you'll save a ton of money.

It's "our" car, but it's pretty much just his cause I don't have a license (I am the suckiest driver EVER).

He is ridiculous about cars too... I've given up on trying to talk him into buying used.

I'm sure we'll find something, I am just so frustrated with this whole ordeal right now.

I have no ideas since I am going to be in the market in about 6 months, so I have no idea what to recommend, but I hope everyone is ok. I know that is SO scary.

Sorry to hear about your car, I hope you are both ok. I just got a new Honda Civic which I looove, even though it is small. My bf drives a Toyota Rav 4 and its great for a small SUV.

I have been told not to buy a hybrid yet b/c technology is developing so quickly in that area that better ones will be availible shortly.

Also, a couple other hybrid considerations:

The hybrids we looked at only got around 5 or so mpg better than the car we currently drive and/or the non-hybrid version of the same car.  Considering how much more expensive the hybrid is than the non, it would take you awhile to make up the difference in price.

Also, there has been some concern re: hybrids if you were to be in an accident and rescuers had to cut the car to get you out.  Something about how the electricity is hard to disable and therefore can be a shock hazard to car passengers as well as rescuers.

interesting points about the hybrids, thanks girls! I never would have thought of some of that, and we don't really have a ton of time to research something. I think we get to keep the rental for 2 weeks. Def. things to think about.

I guess we'll go check out a couple this weekend (good, it'll keep me out of the mall...)

LMonet- we'll def. check out the Subaru since you seem so happy with it. We might check out the CRV too, if I can convince him to try a Honda- my boss has one and I like it a lot.

Oh and yeah, we're all OK. Very surprising for the amount of damage done to the car, but we're just a little sore. My back is bothering me a little still- nothing too bad but I'll probably have it checked out this weekend. I was hoping it would fix itself cause I don't have a doctor and I really don't want to go to a clinic.
