I have a pair of pants that say dry clean only, but they are 97% cotton, 3% spandex - do you think I can wash them on gentle in cold? They just seem like they could be washed, but i also don't want to ruin them. Do you always take "dry clean only" stuff to the dry cleaner?

If its dry clean only then yes. Usually the material can be washed but it can lose its color or shine if it has shine in the material. I tried to hand wash something that was dry clean only and it hasn't looked the same since.
just about everything i buy is "dry clean only".... i think it's a conspiracy & the retail industry is helping out the dry cleaning industry! anyways, i always hand wash my dry clean only's and have had no problems. pants can be hard to hand wash so i usually take those in (plus they iron them so perfectly) but i think u can do it.

I agree with your conspiracy theory crystal!!
I have stopped dry cleaning everything unless it has a lining cause those clothes just can't be washed. Oh, and linen. I will not wash linen myself. Never works out. Ever.
i hand wash a lot of "dry clean only" stuff. i usually take pants and anything lined or structured in to be cleaned though to avoid disaster. i have ruined a few things in the past, so i'm pretty selective about what i choose to break the rules on. i don't think i'd take a chance on a pair of pants that you care about.
i think that i read somewhere that manufacturers only have to list ONE way to launder a garment and it is not necessarily the BEST way. cashmere sweaters for instance... the best/most gentle way to launder them is to hand wash them, but all of the ones that i own say "dry clean only".
