I'm going to San Diego in late June w/ my husband, our 2 young girls, my sister, her husband and their newborn.  We are staying on Coronado Island.  So far we've planned a trip to Sea World one day and the zoo another day.  We'll have a day or two to bum around town after those 2 days.  Does anyone have any kid friendly suggestions on what to do?  Anything kids might enjoy doing, no matter how cheap or expensive it might be. Also fun places for dinner where kids are welcome?  How is Old Town, BTW?  Mostly shopping?

Well, if you guys are not too tired after the zoo and sea world, there is a legoland amusement park in north county san diego, about 40 minutes north of coronado. All the rides look like they were made from legos. Coronado has nice beaches, and you could visit seaport village for cute souvenirs. La jolla is also gorgeous and I would recommend seeing. Old town has good food, and so does gaslamp. I am not sure about kid friendly restaurants. Horton plaza is downtown, it is a mall but has really cool architecture. I will add later if I can think of anything.

Thanks Rocky!  Is there much to do on Coronado?  We're staying on the Naval Base there and they're supposed to have a private beach, so we could do that, but I'm curious to know about the base's surroundings.  Have you been over around the base before?  I've been to the Hotel Coronado before and want to go back.  Is that close?

cricket, a colleague of mine took her three girls (ages 5-2) to legoland and they LOVED it, it seems to be especially geared toward young children, so maybe your girls will like it too.

i don't know san diego very well but i love la jolla--the shopping's the best and it has a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

hth!

How old are your 2 girls?  I was helping a family friend plan a vacation there.  There's a "fab four" deal which includes tickets to the zoo, sea world, legoland, and wildlife park.  http://hotels.san-diego.us/682/-/attraction/36  Here's a top 16 fid friendly restaurants: http://sandiegorestaurants.com/theme.cfm?theme_id=8 HTH!

I don't really go to coronado often. The island is pretty small though, and I think you could probably get to Hotel Del Coronado from there. I had my HS senior prom at that hotel!! Hehe sorry O/T.

Anyways, I thought of Belmont park too. It is on mission beach. There is a small roller coaster and little shops, it might be fun to check out if you have time. I think you guys might be able to rent jet ski's in mission bay...depending on the kids ages??

Oh I love San Diego.  Point Luma (??) is nice and has tide pools where you can go and see the sea life that is washed up between the rocks.  Lots of little sea creatures and star fish.  There is also an old light house you can go up into and look around.  A few miles up in La Jolla there is the children's pool (I think this is what they call it) but you can go at dusk and see all the little sea lions come up on the beach to sleep for the night and watch the frolic in the water before they go to sleep.  It is really cool.  You would probably have some fun taking a bike taxi around the island for a tour.  My mom and I really enjoyed that.  Borrow a Fodor's from your library.  It will come in handy.

Oh if you don't mind animals I hear that the wildlife park is better than sea world and the zoo but I wouldn't skip the zoo if you are picking between the two.  Also if they have the pandas out (one is pregnant so they might not always be out) go to that exhibit first because the line gets long as the day goes on and then go back and start from the front or where ever you want to go.
