There really isn't anything you could do, even if it's broken. He probably bruised it pretty badly, and it's quite possible that the toenail could fall off depending on how hard he kicked that chest! I would have him ice it, take some ibuprofen, try to keep it elevated as much as possible, and don't run any marathons for awhile.

He could also try taping it if it still hurts when he walks.

Well I took a closer look and it looks really bruised but not broken...but who I am to say? He has it iced and elevated...?

Any websites to help determine what stage he is in?

I broke my toe for about the 100th time a few weeks ago - the couch reached out & grabbed my pinky toe - WTF?? lol- it does get entirely blue, then turns to a blue line down it - i just tape my toes together, wear flip flop type shoes (now i can wear my target ballet flats, thank goodness, i hate between the toe shoes). That's probably what he did, no doctor can help, he just has to suck it up. For maybe 3 weeks?? Mine has been 2, and like I say, I can wear ballet flats, but no way in hell I can put on closed toe heels. But it does suck - he isn't just being a baby - hurts entirely more than anything else i've done to injure myself.
