I'm going to stop using shampoo...
Permalink Closed

This week, I finally decided to stop straightening my hair and embrace my hair's natural wave. It's been pretty good so far - I've been using a cream/gel combo for curly hair, been diffusing and air-drying, and using a curling iron to correct the few weird spots that don't wave up pretty.

But I was looking for more tips online and came across a website called naturallycurly.com, which had some forums where EVERYONE was doing something called the "Curly Girl method" - apparently based on a book by a similar name. Basically, you stop using any products with sulfates or silicones, and use shampoo only very sparingly - and when you do, it's a shampoo without sulfates. A lot of people don't ever shampoo at all. You use a conditioner to wash your hair. If you look at this thread, the before and after pictures are incredible. Some people don't even look like their hair is that wavy or curly until they started using the Curly Girl method!

I'm a little wary because my hair is fine, but of course if I don't like it I can always go back to regular shampooing. My BF is going to do it with me, too. Apparently the first couple weeks can be really rough and greasy, but after you "break through" that you can have some incredible changes.

Has anyone else done this? Anyone want to do it with me? wink.gif

Depending on how often you shampoo now and what you shampoo with, you may find that your hair doesn't seem so fine anymore since you won't be stripping away some of the protective oils as often.

Good luck!

I sort-of follow this method - my friend shared it with me, probably ten years ago now. She went to NYC and got her haircut by Ouidad, and she taught it to her.

I only wash my hair once or twice a week, but rinse it in the shower almost every day. I would wash and rinse it less, but I work out every day. While irrational, washing it less + lots of sweating skeeves me out. I use just the smallest amt of shampoo and a water-soluble styling gel to avoid product build up.

My hair always looks its worst on the days I shampoo it!! I notice that my hair is less dry and less frizzy, and definitely holds curls better. You should absolutely try it!

I have been using a product called Hair One from Sally's Beauty.  It is sulfate free, and is a condition only "shampoo".  So far, I think it has helped my hair color last longer, and my hair feels great.  I haven't noticed any change in the texture, or curliness, but it has never been greasy.  It is around $12, I think for 12 or 16 ounces.  Worth a try.

I'm interested in trying this too...right now I only wash my hair twice a week and I agree with jj in that my hair looks the worse on the days I was it.  I've got wavy hair.  Off to check out the link...

This is so cool. I guess I've been doing a one-day version of this.  And, on the days I do it (just use conditioner), my hair behaves like a dream.

So, Domino13 referred to the specific product, Hair One, has anyone run across other products that most people like on the curly board or elsewhere?

BTW: When I air-dry, I pin up my hair in strategic places for height and direction where I need it.  By the time I get to work, I can take out the pins and my hair just waves up and looks neatly styled.  smile

Thanks, Kelly!  I'll try it with you.

Here are some links that break down the process (so you don't have to buy the book) if anyone is interested :)

A lot of the people on the curly site list their products in their sigs, and it looks the Suave and VO5 natural lines are very popular, and the Trader Joes house brand. I went to Walmart and Kroger yesterday and they were pretty much the only conditioners that were silicone-free! It was a pleasant surprise that the most popular and suitable conditioners are also only a couple bucks :) It looks like a lot of people use Herbal Essences Totally Twisted gel to style.

I'm starting today! Woo!

OOH good luck to all the curly haired ladies! Kelly, post before and after pics of your journey for us.

I've read about using conditioner as shampoo before (specifically the Wen Cleansing system that is very popular). Curly hair tends to frizz when it needs moisture so I could totally see this as an effective method. Beauty Brains, one of my fave beauty blogs says:

"For everyday cleaning youll likely be disappointed by using conditioner as your hair cleanser. It can start to build up on hair and feel heavy. It will also attract a lot more dust, pollen, and dirt from the air. But again, it will work. Your best bet is to use a conditioner that does not contain silicones. In this case, cheaper products like Suave and VO5 would work better."

Maybe this is why the cheaper brands like Trader Joes and VO5 are listed as faves?

Interesting pictures! I am glad to see people avoiding carcinogens like SLS.

I have heard from some raw foodists who are "no poo." A lot of them rinse with salt water or use apple cider vinegar rinses, which seems harsh to me, but whatev. Here's a thread on that

Not specific to curly hair but all hair types.

I'm in, too. I've been thinking about doing this for awhile but haven't so this seems like a good time to start!

I want to know how it goes. The good and the bad. I have wavyish hair and this seems like an intresting concept.

I've been kind of doing this already with reducing my shampooing, so I'm on board with trying it with you guys!

I do this kind of. I like to give my hair a "day off" at least once or twice a week. My hair gets too oily to do more than 2 days without washing, but my second day hair is easier to style and is less frizzy.

anyone know if there's anything out there for dandruff?

I dont shampoo my hair everyday but have to once I see dandruff......and the one I've been using has the "bad" stuff in it!

for conditioner I use Garnier Fructis (sp?) and I believe it's ok....right?

and I just bought a gel I saw recommended above and noticed it has the word Laureth 23 in it. That's okay right? its the Sulfates we want to stay away from right?

Damnit! I tried to start last Friday, and I used clarifying shampoo for my last sulfate wash but I somehow missed that dimithecone was in the ingredients! And I can't have that, since it's a silicone, so I had to start over again this morning. I have about 5 different kinds of shampoo in my house, and actually only one didn't have a silicone in it, which surprised me (I used Brilliant Brunette Volumizing today). So everybody make sure to double-check your last sulfate shampoo!

All the Garnier Fructis products I have are OK, but you'll have to check the bottle of whatever you have to be sure. Stay away from anything that says "sulfate" and anything that ends in "-con" "-cone" or "- xane." If it says PEG in front of it (e.g. PEG Dimithecone) you CAN use it because that means that it is water soluble. There are more details at the links I gave before.

I don't know about the dandruff, sorry :(

I just wish they would talk about dandruff. If i get around to it....I will ask about it in the Curly forum.

WOW!  Very interesting - I totally got caught up in that thread.  I might try it too.  I had a hairdresser tell me he did work for a woman that never washed her hair her whole life and it was very beautiful.
