So my FH said he is finally open to the idea of us getting a dog. We want a small dog because our place isn't huge and it's already housing 2 people and 2 cats. So can everyone please tell me their favorite small dogs, pics are a bonus!! No chihauhaus (um I can't spell that) please, they scare me.

It also doesn't have to be a teeny tiny dog, mid sized is okay as well just no Great Danes, labs etc!!

OH I'm sooo excited, a puppy!!

I have a pomeranian and he is great.  He's 8 pounds fully grown and very loveable.  He gets along well with other animals and cats which is a plus since I have 2 cats also.  They are very smart dogs.

I have a Maltese, and he is the most adorable dog..  friendly (except to big dogs) and loves to play.  He doesn't bark, which is important to me and he does not shed.

I second the maltese vote. I got my parents one and they just love her and can't imagine life without her. I can't say anything bad about this breed.

My friend has a Maltese, and she is the sweetest most friendly lovable dog I have ever met.

I would highly suggest that you consider getting a miniature dachsund.  We have one and my husband and I love having her and want to get another one.  I also grew up with one.  They have great dispositions and are very sweet, affectionate and full of personality.  I'm sure some of the girls on this forum that have them would agree (Mia, and I'm not sure who else).  Seriously, they are fabulous dogs!  They are super clingy and always want to be near you.  They are lap dogs and love to be held, but they also love to go on walks and are pretty active.  Here's a good picture of a long-haired mini:

If you get one, I'd choose either a long haired or short haired mini (vs. wire haired).  We have a short haired black and tan one.  HTHS!

Oh I'm so glad you posted this alb - my boyfriend and I want a mini dachsund so bad!  We have him named and everything.  We just have to wait until we move into a place that allows dogs, because our current apartment bldg doesn't.    I'm just so happy to hear the great things you said about them.  We love these dogs so much, and I agree - I think they make the perfect little dog.

Where did you get yours from?  A breeder, or what?

We also have a mini long hair weenie. We have actually had all three kinds- long, short and wired hair. I really like the wiredhair dachshund. There were all great dogs, but my only complaint is they are hard to walk and take places. The long hair weenie we have right now has been the worst. If any strangers come over he barks and goes crazy. I can't take him to the park or to the pet store because he goes NUTS when he sees the dogs and people. I loathe taking Wills to the vet- it is so horrible. I have talked to breeders and they say this is common trait in dachshunds that have not been socialized properly. All our weenies were rescues, so they have not had the greatest life before they came to us. I would make sure you get the dachshund into obedience classes as soon as you can and expose him to as many dogs and people that you can. It is really hard to change their behavior once they have learned it.

Hey shopchicago--We got ours from someone who was selling a few in the newspaper.  They weren't really breeders per se, they just happen to have a few that they were selling.  Ours is very well behaved.  She does get a little excited when she sees other dogs and people, like Ryan mentioned, but it's not a problem for us.  I think they really like to be around people and are just super friendly dogs, and that's why they tend to run up to people (but I'm no expert by any means).  Anyway, we LOVE ours and really want to get another one, as I mentioned.  I don't think you will be disappointed with a dachsund.  Everyone we know or meet who has them also loves them.  The people at the vet love ours and tell us that they look forward to seeing her.  They are typically very loyal and sweet, with great dispositions.  If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.  I had one growing up as I mentioned and then my roommate in law school had two, and now we have our own, so I've been around them almost all of my life.

I love Corgis, they are in the herding category and are extremely loyal, and usually they will stay near you....good for times such as walking around the neighborhood, you can sometimes go without a leash.

I also love Pomeranians, because they are just so cute and sweet.

Don't count out Poodles just because they are so typical, they are perfect little indoor dogs because they shed very minimally and they are easy to manage.

Do not pick your breed based on trends or because he looks cool.  The Jack Russell terrier is a terrific dog, but too many people bought this dog in the past decade and weren't prepared for it's high level of activity and independence.

I highly recommend the mini schnauzer. I've had two so far and they are just so loving and all around fun. The only drawback is that they can be bark-y, like when you walk in the house or someone knocks on the door. It's not an angry bark though, it's more of an excited "who's come to see me?!" bark.

I agree, a lot of people count out poodles because people always shave them to look ridiculous.  I had a toy poodle my whole life, and we didn't shave him, just kept him trimmed like a normal dog.  He was the best dog ever.  So loving and warm and friendly.  He had quite a personality on him too!  He never, ever shed, barely barked - he was so well behaved.  He loved people too.  He was a very loving dog.  I miss him so much (he passed away 1.5 years ago, and I had had him since I was 5).  He lived to be 20 years old!  I'd highly recommend a toy poodle.  We had an apricot/blondish colored one.  I'd get another one, but my boyfriend won't let me!

I have a pomeranian and she is just a darling.  Very affectionate and very smart.  She does tend to bark a lot though, but I think that has more to do with our other two dogs than with her.  She was around them when she was little and picked up their bad barking habits!

She's only about 8 lbs, and most of it is fur!  Also, she doesn't shed, their fur grows, so you just have to keep them groomed.  She is very very friendly...in fact, the reason she barks is to get people's attention so they'll come over and play with her!

I am gonna be preachy for a minute, but don't count out a mixed-breed from a shelter. There are lots of great little dogs who need homes too.

That said, I am obsessed with:

-CORGIS! I wanted one so badly, but my husband wanted a husky instead, so that's what we got.  My mom's neighbor has a corgi/dalmation mix (corgi body with dalmation spots). It's the ugliest/cutest thing ever!

-Jack Russells. I saw one riding a surfboard on TV once and now I want one.

-Beagles. SO cute, but remember that they are a lot of work.

-Daschunds. One of my students has one named Spike. Hee hee.

I agree with halleybird's first statement. I have always wanted a pug, but what it comes down to is paying $$$ for the way a "bred" dog looks when there are lots of funny-lookin' little sweeties at the pound who'd otherwise be euthanized and are just as good - if not better - pets.... So I just can't justify the dough. Mutts usually have sweet dispositions and sometimes even have fewer health problems than purebred dogs because they don't get "over-bred."

A dog is still a dog on the inside, and can love you as much no matter what his exterior or breeding. So why not head down to the pound and see who's looking to be loved? There are all shapes and sizes of dogs, and even some breeds, if you must.

Also, some of the breeds have "rescue" organizations - they end out there when people have adopted purebreds and don't keep them for whatever reason. Ever dear little pugs need to be rescued: http://www.pugrescue.com

Dogs at the breeders will always find someone to buy them. Dogs at the pound won't. So just ask yourself - is this about giving a dog a home, or about having a cute dog under your arm? Before possibly shelling out for an accessory dog (not that you ever implied you were going to - but just giving you something to chew on as you decide), see who really needs a home in order to remain alive. You'll feel truly rewarded... and loved.

Anyway, off the soapbox. Sorry if I offended anyone.
