Report on Laura Mercier Make-up class
Permalink Closed

A few weeks ago I got a mailer from NM that had a sample of Laura Mercier cream blush in a beautiful color that works for me. I bought some from Nordstrom the next time I was in the store, and was encouraged to sign up for a free LM make-up class.

I attended the class today. It lasted two hours, there were about 8 "students" and each of us had our own artist to work with. My artist and I bonded immediately--it was a great, relaxing afternoon. I haven't done anything like this for years, and the last time I had my makeup done was at a spa 5 years ago, so I was overdue for an update. Also, I have been wearing less make up on the theory that as I have gotten older, less is more.

I learned some new application methods and tried some colors new to me. I expected to buy some of the products. Also, I haven't bought any new brushes for years.

No pressure to buy stuff, or use colors I don't like. I am very fair and have deep set eyes, and my biggest gripe with "makeovers" is that they tend to use too strong or too dark colors and I end up looking like Vampira. The LM end result is a little stronger than I like, but I will use a lighter hand on my own.

I've never used this brand before. I use a pastiche of MAC, Estee Lauder, Prescriptives and am always experimenting with drug store stuff. I ended up buying a couple of hundred dollars worth of make up and brushes, but since I haven't bought anything new to wear for two weeks, I figured I deserved it. (If you spend over $100 you also get a gift bag with several items.)

New products and techniques were: cake eyeliner applied from below the upper lashes (I will have to practice this one) cream blush, and using gloss on top of lipstick. I bought some of the tinted moisturizer, which I like in summer, but the drugstore brands I have used before were always off-color on me. The LM one is really nice. Also, I never use bronzer because it is too dark, but LM has some in a fairly light shade and the artist showed me how to put it on.

I did some homework ahead of time by looking up LM in Paula Begoun's book.

thanks for the review! i've seen offers, but never tried one of the classes- i hate sales pressure. how does the brush quality stack up against MAC? please post pics of your buys, and let us know how that cake eyeliner works- it sounds like a great product.
