random: married conversations?
Permalink Closed

Here's for a random question: what do couples who are married or living together talk about? After a while, you know so much about the other person, you don't have anything new to talk about except current events and the weather and what you did that day... Or at least, that's my worst-scenario version of marriage. What's conversation really like? (Um, please excuse such a totally random, uninformed and unimaginative question )

HAHAHA.  I have previously lived with my SO and we are moving in together once again very soon; even so, we are at one another's place all the time, so he seems to think we know one another so extremely well that we don't always need to talk (yep, he actually said this as i was bringing up the very same concern you voiced)...so although i thought it was sweet, i did tell him that he was wrong, and we can't get into a not-talking-because-we-already-know-everything-about-each-other rut.

So, to answer your question (although technically we are not living together at the moment), we do talk about most everything.  I am kinda dense when it comes to current events, so he often has to tell me what is going on in the world and i gossip to him about people he doesn't even know (til it gets to be too much for him).  We have two cats, so we talk about them a lot (we're big dorks, ok) and basically anything important to either of us, especially if we don't feel comfortable discussing it with others.

Oh geez, sorry for the rambling!

Yup, Karina pretty much said everything for me in this topic.

It's like living with your best friend, you talk about everything, tell each other everything, cry together, scared together, starve or eat like pigs together, fight, and have SEX!

Yeah, like Karina said it is really easy.  My husband and I talk about everything.  Things that happened during our day, our friends, current events, politics, music, plans for the weekend.  It really isn't any different than the best friend that you might talk to pretty regularly.

Karina summed it up for me - my live-in boyfriend is my best friend.  We have a blast living together and talk about anything you'd normally talk about.

That sounds so cute~! It reminds me of being trapped inside during thunderstorms for some reason (scared together?) Like a permanent slumber party.  I too worry about running out of things to talk about sometimes, but then we just joke and play and goof off and I remember why I like him so much

Same things you would talk to your best friend about, or the same things you would talk to your family about (if you are close).

These days the most discussed topic is our baby, but the easy answer to this question is really, everything.  That's life.

As everyone has stated, something always comes up. It seems like the second we don't have a topic at hand, a family member or friend does something (usually someting stupid, and we disect it) to get us talking. We also have pets, and sometimes we make senarios like they can talk and take on the role and do voices (I know, I can't believe it either, If I weren't me, I'd make fun of me). We are always quoting movies and junk into our regular conversation to see if anyone notices. My sister is eternally counfused, his catches a few of the references.

And when you do get bored for a moment with each other, I shop, and he works out.

lol - I make fun of myself so much! It makes life a lot more interesting.

Thanks for the answers! I don't have any immediate reason for asking; I was just curious. I guess I'm used to not seeing any of my friends daily, so there's more, it seems like, to talk about. Anyway, I can't wait - this sounds wonderful!

I agree with the others...you talk about everything!

I think when you're married or with someone for a long time, you also get used to just being quiet...I am one of those people who can't stand silence in the social scene, but I like just being quiet at home. My husband is one of the only people I can be quiet with, if that makes sense.

I think that is when you know you really have a good thing...when you still have things to talk about. I mean think about it, I am 28 and been with my bf for 6 1/2 years, so there were 22 years that he wasn't there for. We still find things that we didn't know about each other. Also we are best friends so we talk about all the usual things that you would talk to anyone about. I am never bored with him.
