do any of you have personal trainers?
Permalink Closed

so, i travel for work a lot and when i am at home, i don't feel like working out.   however, when i am on the road, i always get in 30 mins (at least) of cardio and then just reg. crunches, push-ups, etc.

i am thinking about hiring a personal trainer for the weeks/days I am in town to help me get motivated again to work out.  i have worked with trainers before to develop programs that i would then do for 6 weeks until they changed it up again for me- however, i want someone there all the time to push me because i don't think i push myself hard enough or as hard as i could go.

do any of you work with a trainer?  anything i should look for when i hire one?  any advice?

Lola has one but its more of an online thing I think.  PM her about it.  My brother has one and it helps keep him going.

bex - my boyfriend is a personal trainer!  if there's anything specific you want to know, PM me and I'd be happy to help...I pretty much can answer anything since I live w/him and hear about his job all the time.

I have a personal trainer and have had one for 7 months now.  He has helped me shed 20 lbs!

Definitely recommend getting one, but make sure you get one that challenges you as well as motivates you.  You will know if the PT is not right for you after a couple of sessions.

Make sure that he/she is certified and has enough experience for you.  I had a PT in NY that I had to switch because I ended up not learning much from him.

My husband is a personal trainer too. Ask away!

I think the most important thing is that they challenge you without over exerting you, and listen to your concerns. Some feel like that have so much to prove, and over do it with clients. If you go through a company, they will often give you an assessment and a free session to help you gauge the kind of things they would have you do.

I hear about all the progress he is making with his clients, and I am jealous because I have no motivation, so I'm having him join my gym so he can train me (so much cheaper for us than me going to where he works! It's really expensive there, but it is private personal training)

Make sure they are really a professional.  My gym actually hires personal trainers that don't have professional training; I couldn't believe it when I found out, but if it happens in my town, I bet it happens everywhere.  Ask what kind of certification they have. My trainer is a certified traner and certified strength and conditioning specialist. She is also going for her pro-card this year (I have no doubt she'll get it).  Since pro-cards are so elusive, I think that speaks volumes as to the qualification.  I guess there are lots of types of certification, but I am not sure; just make sure they have some kind of professional training/certification.

Also, it's not a bad idea to shop around.  Try out a trainer and if you don't like him/her, dump him/her for someone else.  Keep going til you find the right person.

Good luck.

Oh defintely make sure whoever you get is Certified!  Drew, I can't believe your gym hires trainers w/no certification.  That's terrible.

Drew is right though - there are a lot of different certifications.  My boyfriend has one called NPTI.  It's nationally recognized.  A.C.E is another popular one.
