Leather sofa + dog
Permalink Closed

So, we've completely spoiled our dog and the sofa in the TV room is "hers."  She falls asleep there everynight.  Needless to say, it is covered in hair.  She has very very short hair, so it isn't horrible, but I am very tired of lint rolling the sofa.

I want to get new furniture and I know there is no way we can keep her off of it since she's already had free reign. (She knows to stay off the furniture in living room b/c she's never been allowed).

Do any of you have leather sofas and dogs that use it too?  I am a little worried about her nails scratching it up.  She isn't a digger or a scratcher per se, but she does do about 6 spins before she lays down.

Any ideas?

As long as you get an appropriate leather, it's nearly indestructible by dogs.  My in-laws have two huge labs and leather sofas, and the sofas look brand new still after 4 years!  Most places also offer a warranty that covers any rips.scratches in the leather, so if you're still concerned you could always purchase that when you get your sofa.

I'd shop around before you buy to make sure you're being shown the same sort of leather at each place - when you see the leather samples, try scratching them hard with your fingernails.  If it leaves a mark, that's not the leather for you!  The ones that will be the most durable are the ones that you should be able to rake on over and over and not see a scratch.  If you can find one like that, leather is perfect for pets because it doesn't pick up smells and can be wiped down for cleaning.

What we do to keep the hair down on our (non-leather) sofa is keep our pup on her own blanket - it matches the color of the couch and is made of fleece, so the hair sticks there and not the couch.  That way all I have to do to remove the hair is take the blanket off and stick it in the dryer for a few minutes, instead of vacuuming/lint rolling the entire couch.  Maybe that would work as a temporary fix?

we have this sofa by ashley furniture-we have had it for almost 4 years and our 2 weenie dogs practically live on it and it has held up very nicely. their nails tend to be longer than they should be-however they don't scratch the leather and we use those leather wipes from target and they work great for keeping it clean.
