What are your favorite annuals or perennials you use if you garden? I'm starting my garden and am wondering what you guys like.

we live at an apartment complex, so i don't have a garden but we have flower boxes.  i plant "sweet williams" in them.  my BF's name is William and my pet name for him (which he HATES) is sweet william... hence why i pick these particular flowers... they are a pretty pink flower...

peonies & hydranega (sp?) are 2 of my favorites. they both make great cut flowers too.

there is an absolutely gorgeous peonies article in the latest martha stewart. i can't wait to sit down and read it. i've already drooled over the amazing photographs.

and this year i want to plant poppies!

I love peonies - so easy to grow, especially if you pick a variety that's well suited for your area/weather.  (Hotcocoa - the MS article on peonies was lovely!)

Begonias are nice too - you can overwinter them in your garage and they put on an even bigger show the next year.

Poppies are quite fun too - grow nicely in pots or in the ground with little care.  And they really do 'pop', which the cat found very entertaining.

I also really like growing herbs - usually better in pots b/c some can be pretty invasive.  There's just something about being able to go out your back door and get some fresh basil for your spaghetti sauce . . .

here are some of my favorites:
perennials:
peonies
nepeta (catmint) -- it's bushy with silver blue-ish foliage and purple flowers

echinops (globe thistle) -- tall with big round purple blooms

budlia (butterfly bush)

echinacea
clematis

for annuals:
cleome
there are tons of coleus that look great in planters, can tolerate shade, and get huge:

lantana
scaveola
verbena
zinnia
