Good Friday

While I'm not particularly religious now, I did grow up Catholic. Good Friday was always sort of somber around our home, like I thought it should be - we weren't really allowed to go out, we couldn't pig out at dinner, etc.

But then I heard someone talking today about how her mom used to make gooey sugar buns to celebrate Good Friday. And I just read a blog where someone said "Happy Good Friday!" and talked about celebrating.

I am caught completely offguard. For those of you who are Christians - is my family weird? Do most familes celebrate this like a little holiday?

In my experience what you described is normal. I grew up in a conservative christian family, and Good Friday was the most somber day of the year.

I was raised and still am a practicing Catholic and Good Friday wasn't somber, but we didn't celebrate either. We do abstain and fast all day.  Not eating jelly beans is very difficult. ashamed

One year when I was about 12 my mom let us rent some videos on a Good Friday. Having no idea what the movie was about, I chose Jonny Dangerously (a kind of risque sex comedy) because I liked Micheal Keaton in Batman. batman.gif I lost my movie picking privileges for a long time.

Same here. It wasn't necessarily somber, but it was very no-nonsense and we couldn't eat snacks in between meals but we did eat the three basic meals. Definitely not a day for celebration in our house.

In my home (catholic), GF just kinda came and went.  The only notoriety came from when I was in catholic school (k-4).  I had my mind on eggs and chocolate anyway.
