you probably have to sign up with a web hoster and register the name through there if its available and upload your stuff to their server (just like with free sites like geocities but without the ads and long address).

My bf is a graphic designer and he uses Dream Host to host webpages many times- that is what he is using for mine. When you sign up for a hoster many times you can register your domain name then. Dreamhost will pay for that if you buy certain packages that htey offer.

so when i type in a URL and it says, do you want to buy this domain name, I don't have to do it that way? How much is dream host, ryanj? What host does this site use?

No, you don't have to buy it then- you can, but many times tha fee is included in your package.

The price just depends on how you pay for your site and what you want. If you pay month to month it will be more expensive. I think I have a one year contract and I pay $9.95 a month and registering my domain name was free.

You don't need to buy a domain name AND a hosting package at the same time. To register/buy a domain name you need to go to a company/party that is officially sanctioned to sell them. Internic is THE place to go for info - here is their list of accredited registrars: http://www.internic.net/regist.html - you can buy a domain name online with your cc and anyone listed in that listing will be legit. Most of those registrars will have search functions as well, so you can search to see if a name is taken already.
