Just when I think I'm finally getting the hang of this being-a-grown-up thing, something throws me for a loop. I'm sitting in the library, studying for a massive week of finals coming up (in law school, you only get one test for your whole grade) and I'm completely distracted because the guy I like is here flirting with this pushy, big-boobed third year. (they hooked up two weeks ago and it looks like it's still on...)

I've already loudly chatted and giggled about another guy I legitimately think is cute. walked past his seat, oh, three times (ok, in the sort of twisted space time continum where three is five) and otherwise managed to act like a middle schooler. I am a very sad girl. Y'all, a pick me up please? Some words of wisdom? a reminder that somewhere under all the idiocy is a shred of dignity just waiting to be discovered....

it's the fishbowl environment, dizzy, not you.  seriously going to law school is like going back to jr. high.  i remember inwardly flipping out when the boy i was "talking to" for want of a better term brought his ex to "law prom."  seriously, i couldn't make up this juvenile stuff if i wanted to!

anyway, here's your pick me up--you're better than this.  you know you are.  and you need to focus on finals because your 1L grades will haunt you long after this crush is over.

so go to another library/coffee shop/friend's apt., whatever you have to do to study.  And try dating outside of law school, it's better for your sanity, TRUST ME.

You're soooo right!

I always (to this day) complain about how awful law school was for people's emotional and mental growth. It's like going back to high school all over again. Except without the fun. I avoided law school drama like the plague. I tried to have a lot of friends outside of law school and, without exception, NEVER WOULD I EVER DATE A LAW SCHOOL GUY, former or current. That leaves out lawyers, unfortunately. (Of course if Mr. Perfect happens to have gone to law school one semester or so before he wisely dropped out, that's a different story.)

Think about it. All the annoying know-it-alls in your philosophy and business classes are now trapped in one "fishbowl" trying to retain their alpha-dog status, which they never really had before but are convinced (for some odd reason) that being a law student means they're suddenly cool and hot. It's the most bizarre situation I've ever had the displeasure of being involved in.

Don't worry. One step back for perspective's sake will make all your sanity come flooding back to you. Besides, if we can't focus on completely absurd and insane things while we're studying for finals, we'd never make it through.

Oh god - we have law prom too... Wow. I thought it was just our school that invented this uber level of dorkiness. Thanks guys! You're totally right about jr. high/high school and the fishbowl and, yeah, law school boys. Where do they all get their hair cut? Maybe three of them had decent hair before school started, and now they're all wearing some sort of white boy gelled-afroish thing. Yuck. What was I thinking? OK. I'm moving to starbucks for a while.

Esquiress, you are sooooo right!  Law school felt like junior high all over again.

OMG, yes!!!! To this day (a whole 2 years out of law school) I can spot a law school boy a mile away. They have this "my shit don't stink" about them, combined with baaaddd polo shirts, some deformed brand of pant that was cool 10 years ago, and hair that would hurt to touch. Why? I just know these guys were the biggest dorks in high school and college. When did they suddenly decide they were cool? And how? Did they suddenly get laid when they started saying they were in law school? I can't believe it but it must be so.

Seriously - I've never seen more perplexing series of events than at law school social events (aka casino night, drink until you puke night, etc.). It's so surreal. Luckily, I had some good non-lawschool friends who gave me reality checks. It was nice to know the whole world hadn't gone crazy, just the law students.

Those people will always be law students, day one to day end. You, on the other hand, know there is another world out there and this insanity will one day end. Stay strong and sane!
