I found a little article in Elle the other night as I was going through old magazines (so from like Feb probably), about pain caused by high heels that made me think of the conversations on here from a week or two ago. I'll type it up here in case it might help anyone...
Stiletto SOS
At the request of her well-heeled students, Julia Halpin, an instructor at New York City's the Gym (and a former ballet dancer), designed the Stiletto Stretch to help prevent some of the damage (hammertoes, bunions) inflicted by high heels. "When a foot is constantly bound, whether in pointe shoes or stilettos, the muscles and bones get stuck in misalignment. Drawing out the toes will straighten them and prevent painful problems," says Halpin, who recommends doing five minutes of stretching daily. "Interlace fingers with toes and pull back on the foot. Also, point and flex the feet to increase circulation and prevent cramping." For allover foot fitness and better alignment to boot, Yamuna Body Rolling Foot Savers (below, www.yamunabodyrolling.com) are plastic half spheres that come with a detailed workout book to help increase foot flexibility and strengthen arches as well as elongate hip, thigh, and calf muscles.
I never knew something like this was made. When I did ballet, I started using tennis balls, just rolling them around on the floor with my feet to massage the bottoms of my feet. It works really well after a day in heels, too.
