I'm moving there! Anyone got any tips on good, affordable, neighborhoods and such?? I want to live very close to the city..

bostongal I just sent you a pm if that's ok! :)

here is some more info:

I keep searching on craigslist for sublets for the summer and I have some clue about a few different neighborhoods, but absolutely no clue about others.

My price range is up to $750 (incl. utilities) and would love to live in or as close to downtown as possible. Looking to sublet w/ roomates.

Some areas I am looking into:

Allston (off Commonwealth)

Brookline (too far?)

Fenway area

Places up and down Comm Ave (one place near Harvard Ave)...

"Coolidge Corner"

In Cambridge on Mass Ave/Central Square?

North End (concerned about parking here and the general neighborhood...is it a good place to live on or just to visit?)

I found places in these areas that seem to be in my price range...what's your opinion of these areas? What's the general vibe of these areas? Anywhere else you suggest I look into?

Also, if you know of any sublets please let me know! :)

Thank you so much for any help! I'm pulling my hair out over here! I'm overwhealmed w/ all the different opportunities...

oh yay!  i loooooove boston.  miss it tons.  if you're not going to live in the city itself, i'd suggest brookline (just west of boston) or cambridge/somerville (across the charles, just north).  i lived in another town called brighton which is a safe area, but it took almost 45 minutes to get into boston because the train was soooo slow (avoid the b train on the green line!).  brookline is great- especially the coolidge corner area.  it's also on the green line, but you take the c train which is quick.  cambridge or somerville are a good option too because the red line (the train that serves that area) is super fast.  i have many friends who live up there and commute into boston for work everyday.  within the city, i'd check out beacon hill or the north end.  it'll be pricier and the apartments might be smaller than what you'd find elsewhere, but those are great neighborhoods.  good luck!

have so much fun in boston!

ooh, i just remembered this thread about boston neighborhoods... lots of good info.

I've lived in Boston for 5 years now, and I love it. I'd also recommend Cambridge (I work in Cambridge) and certain parts of Somerville if you want to live just outside the city. If you want to live in the city, I'd check out the Back Bay area -- there are some great newer apartments to be found there and many that have been recently renovated (which I'm sure they'll brag about in the apartment listing ads!)

Happy to welcome a ST member to the city!!

Oh, and I just saw that you mentioned Fenway in your post. For awhile I lived in the apartment building that's the closest one to Fenway Park, right on Boylston St. It was exciting when there are games (April - October) but an absolute nightmare if you have a car and you want to leave your house or come home. Especially during the more important playoff games, or whenever the Sox play the Yankees, the whole Fenway area becomes a huge chaotic mob scene. My boyfriend's car has been broken into several times during games (parking is obviously first come, first serve, and on the streets) and mine was as well. Of course parking is always a risk in cities, but having huge, sometimes angry, usually drunk crowds of people hanging around has not fared well for our vehicles!

HTH!

Are you planning on keeping your car?  My friend lives on Boylston and he sold his car because he said it was soooo expensive to keep for parking.

yes I am trying to keep my car...I found a couple of places that include a parking spot, but the North end Apt (along w/ others) may not work because of my car. :(  I really want to live IN the city but I'm seeing that this is definitely a factor for me.
