Anyone here with hypothyroidism? Diet tips?
Permalink Closed

My doctor suspects that I have hypothyroidism and i'll go for blood work Monday to confirm or deny. Does anyone else have this? And does anyone have tips on diet and which foods to consume/avoid? I read no broccoli, peaches, pears, corn, peanuts, kale, brussel sprouts, strawberries, soy....the list goes on. And is it true you should only consume organic dairy products? I also saw somewhere that you shouldn't eat almond seeds. What the heck is an almond seed?

TIA!!

I don't have this, but my dad does. Honestly I don't know a lot about it. He does take medicine, I don't know what, but I don't think he makes a lot of dietary sacrifices. I know he eats broccoli, peaches, corn, peanuts, and strawberries. We never really ate kale, brussel sprouts, or soy growing up, but I don't know if it's due to his hypothyroidism as much as just to my parents' preferences. He definitely consumes regular, non-organic dairy.

I've never heard of dietary restrictions for regular ol' hypothyroidism, aside from a moderate diet in general to help control weight gain that hypothyroid can cause.

There are different causes for thyroid issues, some that may require dietary restrictions but others that do not.  The ones that do are very rare, so the chances that you have the 'regular' kind that requires only a little pill everyday is much higher.  Don't read into it too much before you get diagnosed (or not), with the exceptions of research on levels of hormones that are now considered 'normal'.  They recently tightened up the 'normal' range (it's now TSH between 1 and 2 IIRC), so make sure you get the actual numbers.  Heck, I'd probably ask to see/get a copy of the lab report, myself.

My brother has hypothyroid and I don't remember him having any diet restrictions. He actually didn't eat much more than meat and potatoes until the past year when he started adding in more fruits and veggies and none of his doctors have told him that it was a bad idea or to avoid anything so far. I'd just try things experimentally and if you see a problem you can eliminate the cause.

The only diet restrictions around hypothyroidism is with foods that can suppress iodine in the body. Iodine deficiencies can sometimes cause hypothyroidism and can definitely play havoc with the proper function of the thyroid.

So, anything that can be iodine-suppressive or low in iodine should be avoided. Foods high in iodine should be eaten (but not too much, too much iodine is just as bad in general!).

I used to be borderline hypothyroid (in college)- and my doctor prescribed a low dose of synthroid.  i had no dietary restrictions at all.  my mom had it too and she didn't have any either.  I, too, have never heard of dietary restrictions for ppl w/ low thyroid counts.

on a side note, i loved taking my synthroid!  it gave me more energy and i lost some weight.  it was my idea to be tested b/c i was tired all the time so i asked my doctor to test me.  my mom had just started taking it at the time and she liked the extra energy and subtle weight loss.  she was also only borderline (like me).  some docs don't prescribe the meds if you're borderline but ours did b/c we asked him to.  but then when it reached normal levels he stopped the meds.

whenever i start to feel a continual lack of energy though i get tested.  just fyi - it's actually not such a bad thing to have a low thyroid.

I got my bloodwork back and i'm totally fine and good. Fwiw, it's goitrogenic foods that "they" say are bad. There are lots of articles on the web, not reliable I know, but a couple books mentioned it as well. Or maybe they're only bad for you if you've developed a goiter? I dunno. Anyhoo, thanks for the tips.smile
