How do you girls organize your files?
Permalink Closed

I am slowly absorbing BF's OCD skills and I want to organize all my files (bank statements, credit card bills, utility bills, apartment leases, etc.). I HATE ugly metal file cabinets, even if I could paint them some lovely shade or green.

How do you girls store your important files? I want it to be somewhat attractive, a bit quirky, and preferably under $100 (I'd rather spend the dough on clothes and shoes)

I used to have a portable wicker filing box similar to a banker's box.  It held a ton of hanging file folders, but it became to bulky & cumbersome.

I'm currently using an expandable file folders for all of my stuff.

One has all of my medical, investment papers, paystubs, etc. & another for my yearly tax stuff--donation receipts & mailing receipts for anything I sell on ebay.  As for my bank statements, I placed them into a  3-ring binder & have them separated by year.  Now everything goes onto my bookshelf & is hidden away unlike the box I had.

We have a VERY ugly metal file cabinet, but it's hidden in the closet. If it had to show, I would definitely get a better-looking one. I love filing things. a love acquired in the administrative assistant days of my youth :) I have hanging folders for various categories: credit card statements, utility bills, car, etc., and within those hanging folders I have regular folders (i.e. under utility, there's a gas folder, DWP folder, etc)

nice-looking file cabinets under $100 are hard to find though. target.com has some decent looking ones, including this one, which you can paint, but it's $120:

Our computer armoire has a file drawer built in, so we use that for current/pertinent info.  Then we have one of these:

My husband is super-anal about file organization. He has all our files and bills alphabetically organized in a pretty dark-wood file cabinet from Crate & Barrel. Each file is also chronologically organized, and he even has a little "paid" stamp for the bills.

Sigh. But he still won't pick up his socks or throw away candy wrappers...
