Does anyone use an epilator? Any recs, suggestions, etc.? Home waxing isn't working out for me - some days I manage to get everything, some days I just get wax all over my leg and nothing to show for it. I want to give one more at-home option before I start ponying up for salon waxing!

I'm looking at these models:

I say go for it. If you can stand some pain. Well if you can wax, then I'm sure you can stand the pain of an epilady. Plus after using it for sometime...you get used to it. I borrowed one from a friend and I love hers more then the one I ended up buying after loving the results. She has one thats with real metals and the one I bought is more fake. Hers works way better but mines still works good. I just didn't want to fork out that much $ for one, but should have. oh well
and she got so lucky! she found hers at a 99cent store and paid only 10 bucks!

I got this last summer and I love it!  The pain factor isn't too bad and the results last a few weeks.  It's great because of the different attachments, so you can shave with it if you want to.

It's $60, but that pays for itself in a use or two if you use it instead of getting a salon bikini wax.

Oooo NCShopper that one looks good, I think I would like having the whole kit because I would feel more prepared!

I know this is going to sound like such a silly question, but I do worry about it a little bit: do you find that your hair grows in finer after using it a while? I know people have said that if you wax enough, your hair grows back really fine or really slow. And while I'm sure I'll want hairless legs for the rest of my life, so that wouldn't bother me, I worry a little bit about epilating my bikini area because hello, just 30 or 40 years ago, there were those 70s porn stars with the huge bushes...and maybe in 30 more years that will be the height of fashion and my poor almost-hairless crotch will be totally old fashioned giggle.gif

I've heard good things about the Braun silk-epil but haven't used it. I am scared of the epilady name as I used to own one of the originals (many years back) and boy that was painful.  I think they're much better now. I'm not really sure that hair stops growing completely- maybe it grows in thinner but I've never found with waxing that it just stops growing!

LMFAO!! I'm glad I wasn't eating anything while reading this because I probably would have choked.

So is this just for the bikini area or can you use it on legs as well?

I have used a Braun Silk-épil for years, and just love it. I find hairs grow much finer after a while.
Only thing, I can't manage to use it for my bikini line - still go to a professional to have it waxed...

Personally- no, i've never had my hair grown in finer.  I've talked to others and they claim it is a myth based on two facts:

1) when you shave- your hair is blunted so it FEELS coarse and sharp, when you wax, this doesn't happen

2) each hair is in a different "cycle" of their growth.  So if you wax, in 4-6 weeks when you are ready to wax again.. only a third of the hairs may have reappeared, so it seems less.  If you wait 4 months or so- most will be back :)  When you wax regularly, you don't notice this.

I have a braun silk-epil. It really hurt the first couple of times I used it, but now I use it regularly it doesn't hurt at all. I got one because shaving was irritating my legs and they're much better now. I find my legs aren't quite as smooth as with shaving because it can't grab the very short hairs but overall I like it and much prefer it.

Do these work on short hairs? Or do you have to wait to grow out your hair before you can use?

I also haven't noticed a difference in the hair growing in finer. It's the same as it always was, buy Lynnie's right--it seems to grow at different rates. So I guess to answer your question, Kelly, if the full bush style comes back in when we're all 60, I think we'll be able to manage just fine. smile.gif

As far as using it on your legs goes, you'd have to let the hair grow to about 1/4 inch for it to work and I'm not sure it's worth that. With the Bikini Perfect system that I have, it has some shaver attachments and that would work better.

As far as hair length goes, it does have to be at least about 1/4 inch. Any shorter and there's nothing for the epilator to grab onto.

The one thing to be careful about though is that you need to exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate like every day after you've used the epilator on your bikini line. Otherwise ingrown hairs will become a problem. And that's not fun.

Kitty - I use it on my legs, and my epilator removes hairs that are only 1-2mm long, although not always first time so I have to go over a couple of times to make sure. HTH
