Yay! Me and Gary are doing that next Spring. We are going from NY to Los Angeles. What route are you planning on taking, north or south? We are taking the Southern Route from NY to DC to South Carolina to Alabama, Lousiana, Texas, Nevada to Cali.

I have always wanted to "get my kicks on Route 66!" if you are doing the cross country thing I would highly suggest you do it this way. something on my list of things to do in my life....

there's tons of state sites for route 66 too just google route 66...

yes, it does end in chicago, but from Chicago you can drive over to Michigan, up through Detroit, cut through Canada, drive back into the states through Niagara Falls, then on to the NY Finger Lakes wine region and then over to NYC...

My bf did this growing up with his grandfather. I'll ask him what he remembers for you to see. I think it really will just depend on what route you want to take. If you decide southern route let me know - but it will probably take you longer.

all i can say is i'm really jealous! i've always wanted to do something like that. try contacting triple a! if you're not an aaa member yet, i definitely suggest becoming one before your trip. i think you get three free tows with your annual membership. they can also provide you with tons of maps and maybe some cool scentic road suggestions.

I've driven almost across the country a few times (when I went to U of Colorado I drove back and forth from VA a couple of times, and when I worked in NM I drove out there and then also drove around out west quite a bit - up to Montana and back a couple times, out to Vegas, etc). Sometimes solo, sometimes with friends, in college with my parents.

ANYWAY - there is a far southern route and sort of a center route.... have't gone along the top route yet. Some good stops I made on the more central route included Memphis (any road trip really should include Graceland) and Dodge City, Kansas (so you can say "let's get the hell outa dodge and actually mean it!). Also a stopover to see the Biltmore Estate in Ashville, NC, was really memorable. Western NC and also Kentucky & Tennessee are beautiful. The best thing about all road trips I have ever taken has been that I have done so with no reservations anywhere so I could change my mind along the way and zig-zag if i felt like it. There are a lot of guide books on the subject, pointing out intersting and ofbeat places along the way. I saw wing it. That is the most fun. Just be sure you have AAA for discounts and also for roadside assistance.

I have had good and bad experiences on the road - the Texas panhandle, I learned, is no place to be in August, especially with a rabbit in the back seat (RIP, Flopsy...) - it is HOT (as I, and sadly, Flopsy, learned). Do not make that mistake.

What a great adventure - I hope to have the opportunity to do so again myself...

DH and I drove from CT to Seattle a few summers ago. It was a pretty fun trip, and I got to pick up a lot of cheesy, tacky souvenirs, which I have a not so secret love for.

I got to see a lot of things I would never have otherwise or probably never will again, like Mt. Rushmore and Little Big Horn. We saw some amazing scenery and had some interesting experiences in little towns. And I ate like a PIG.

If you decide to drive, take along some audio books! Some places had no radio reception and the first four Harry Potters saved our sanity!

I also learned to love beef jerky.

I second the AAA membership. It was worth it, and they can make you a TripTik before you leave on your trip, so you can have a clear route of where you are going. Plus, the discounts on hotels and attractions pay for the cost of the membership.

well I drove cross country twice (from CA to Va) when my husband was in the navy but on both occassions he only got 11 days leave so I had to make the trip in 2.5 days so I don't remember much. Although, I do recall the St. Louis arch thing (that was kind of cool). Another thing we did when we lived in Norfolk was take a drive up north to DC and MA which was really pretty. Sorry I can't be of more help. Have fun though and take lots of pictures (something I wish I would have done more of).

i really want to do this next year. we were thinking we'd drive to the west coast, then fly home. i would prefer driving through the south because i'm partial..but i think either way it would be fun.

Escrime, LOL - what is it about being in the car for a long period of time that requires beef jerky???? I'd normally NEVER eat that stuff, but if we are in the car for hours, I must have it.

This sounds like so much fun - let us know your route. I think lots of us have ideas if you are coming south.

I'm not a beef jerky person but I have to say the only thing that kept me sane on the way from BR to Jacksonville last summer was making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches the entire way there and back. The bf and I went through 2 loaves!
