Ok so I quit my job, but working out my contract till July. I have been in retail at various places for 10 years, currently I work at a small gift shop and I act as an accessory buyer, daily operations such as the deposit and monthly numbers, I also do our advertising.... and much more. I have a degree in Small Business Mgt. and Entrepreneurship.
I am at a complete loss of what I want to do next. I know that I need to make more money. I value my weekends, after only having one off a month for the past 10 years. I am spoiled now b/c the gift shop is inside of a school so I have a fabulous schedule, but make no money and there is no room for promotions or new experiences. I am bored.
I also find that it is not healthy for me to work in a small environment such as a small retail boutique or the gift shop b/c I am never alone. I am always interrupted and I hate having a boss over my shoulder. I am great with completing what is asked from me, but I like to be able to do it myself, rather than someone step by step telling me what to do, even when I have already been doing it for the past 2 years. I sound really whiny right now, sorry.
Any ideas of where I can start to find a new career, like assessment tests to help steer me in some direction. I also crave being creative, but I also like to be a problem solver, follow clear directions and have some structure.
Blah blah blah I have bored myself again, and I hope that I haven't bored you. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I am really interested in taking some quizzes online that would help me generate some ideas also, if anyone knows some good links that would be great!
if you have the retail experience, enjoy the buying aspect-
why don't you try to get on at Nordstroms? They have regionalized buyers for their company.
You start out on the retail level and they promote you to buying from within. you can't walk into a buying position with them. you have to start out on the retail floor to understand their company completely.
it's an idea. if i would have known that nordstrom's worked that way when i graduated from college, i would have gone to work there. i would have had no money unless they put me in the men's department... but i think they are an awesome company.
