Pepper I have read Peter Mayle's Provence series as well and they are wonderful.
Harry Fans I am going to the bookstore at midnight to get it. I did this last time. It was fun, my friend and I were the only people in our, ahem, very early thirties without children in tow. We discussed possibly borrowing a couple of children this time.
laken1 I just finished White Oleander and then I rented the movie. I had pictured the characters differently. Did you see the movie? The guy playing Uncle Ray is far too pretty.

I am reading The Devil in the White City. I wish I had more time to finish it, plus it's kind of a slow read, it usually takes me a day and a half to read a book and this one is dragging on forever.

After reading Middlesex I was intrigued by Jeffrey Eugenides, so I just finished The Virgin Suicides, which was his first book. I did not want to stop reading it and was mesmerized by every page. I only saw the ending of the movie so I am definitely going to rent it one of these days!

sage, white oleander, yes, I did see the movie & I hated it - I just don't think they can EVER translate a book to the big screen. When i read it I knew how it was cast, so i had the michelle pfeifer, allison lohman, robin wright penn, & renee zellwiger (SP?) characters in mind, but I agree, uncle ray was too cute for his part. He needed to have bad teeth or something
I just loved it too much to have people act it out, again, strange attraction to it.

I'm so glad someone started this thread - I have already ordered a new book based on this conversation & I am always looking for new authors - both funny / lighthearted & not.

Your probably not interested if your just looking for entertainment, but I am reading, "Trump Strategies For Real Estate, Billionaire Lessons for the Small Investor," by George Ross.  He's the old guy on The Apprentice.  It's not bad; stuff about negotiating contracts, picking a location that will increase in value quickly, etc.

laken1 I think Uncle Ray was missing some fingers and stuff too wasnt he?? I think Michelle Pfeiffer was well cast because she is beautiful and does the manipulation thing well, but I didn't buy her as the artistic type.
jaymiek I loved Middlesex too. Thanks for the report on The Virgin Suicides, I will def be picking that one up.

Ooh lsubatgirl, I love The Giver.  It has been a while since I read it, but I think it remains one of my favorite books.  If you still need another fantasy book, I read Holes for my kiddie lit class and found it very intriguing.  Also, I am a huge Madeleine L'Engle fan, so any of her stuff is great.  She writes novels for adults too, which I love because I identify so closely with her characters.


I need to spend some time for myself at the library.  I am there about once a week to get picture books.  I should make a list of everyone's recs and check some out!

Yay!!  I was in the stage version of Travels with My Aunt in college.  It is a great story!!


After I finish my Glamour (cover to cover babe) I am going to start reading Suze Orman's The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous and Broke.  I need some motivation.

I'm on such a Wodehouse kick right now! I've read A Damsel in Distress, Something Fresh, and right now I'm in the middle of Uncle Fred in the Springtime. He's soooo funny. I laugh out loud when I read these books. Any other Wodehouse fans out there?


After I finish Uncle Fred I'm going to move on to Wicked by Gregory Maguire. I haven't read it yet and I can't wait. After that I'll probably re-read the last two Harry Potters before the new one comes out. I didn't pre-order it but that's because I'll be at the bookstore at midnight, with all the kiddies. Last time I went we got to wear HP glasses and wands. It rocked! (Yes, I know. I'm a nerd.)

nope, i actually just finished that before picking up the decidely more literary Saramago book.  It was cute!  I finished it in a night, it was like candy for the mind, and I loved it.

shopchicago33, NO INDEED - I read the whole series + the other book she wrote "Can you keep a secret" which is not a Bloomwood book but is just as funny- they are all HYSTERICAL. I love her.

Now I've switched to "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" because I wanted to read it before we saw the movie. It is SO funny. For some reason I feel smart when I get the jokes.
