What do you guys think of Tory Burch's collection?  http://www.toryltd.com/ Neiman's carries a few of her pieces

Tory by TRB - Rhinestone Trim Tunic

While I think her stuff is pretty, it doesn't turn me on THAT much... Can someone explain all the hype over her line?

By the way - I found some really cool sequined linen tunics at TJ Maxx for $19.99 each.  I'm sure they're not the same quality, but I'll only wear them a smattering of times during this spring/summer then most likely will not be caught dead in a tunic next year as they'll be out of style...

So is this the "it" shirt or designer for '05 like I keep hearing? Pesonally, I'm just not getting it...

i think a lot of the hype has to do with her being a socialite and having a lot of socialite friends who promote and wear her items.

i think they are cute and interesting, but seem sort of pricey.

Exactly. She's really well connected and was already regularly featured in fashion magazines just for being a well-dressed lady who lunches and an important part of the NY social scene so it's only natural that the same magazines are going to hype her clothing line.

i agree with erin & cc. almost every article i've read about her clothing starts with the fact that she's a socialite. as though that is some sort of pre-requisite for being a designer.

yeah - I know she's a socialite - you would think that alone wouldn't carry her.  are people really that blind in their motivation to buy things?

Is her bridge line Tory by TRB?  If so, I like that line MUCH better.

This starburst tank is cute, $85:

no there is no bridge line, it's all Tory by TRB.  some pieces are just more expensive than others... I do like her logo tank and the sequined skirt that is sold out - but I'm not shelling out that kind of money for it.

i'm not sure. i'd like to think it's not enough, but there's so much hype surrounding her it gets hard to distinguish b/t publicity and sales figures. especially now with so many "celebrities" coming out with clothing lines, i do think that some people are that blind in their motivation to buy things.

however my hope is that in the end talent trumps hype.  look at j.lo's line, she's had so many problems with it b/c her celebrity couldn't overcome crappy clothes. and ultimately consumers recognized that.

I hope for talent ultimately trumping hype as well.  funny thing is, and this has happened to me on more than one occasion, I've spotted something I like on a rack, take a look at the tag and see J.Lo - it immediately goes back.  I wouldn't buy it since its marketing gimmick is her and she has no integrity as a designer.

I used to work in the buying department for one of the world's largest mass retailers.  We had "celebrity" lines that the celebrity had absolutely no hand in creating - they simply saw the end product so they would be aware of what their line was - they had absolutely no hand in any design or selection of fabrics - nothing - it was just a final review since their name was on the label.

They are cute, but tunics are so overdone this season, I wouldn't pay that much for one.

i agree with sfclinevandy--a lot of it is really boring, but the brighter colored tunics and wide pants have kind of a babe paley in palm beach in the 60s vibe that i like.

I think her things are cute enough in general, but way to $$$!!! I saw her on Oprah this week, I guess part of the hype / celebrity type deal, and I liked a few things. Then when I looked at the price of a tunic - HOLY MOLY!! Not that cute & will be out of style quick. I guess when you are a millionaire / billionaire $500 is like dropping $1 for us though.

Her stuff looks like a bunch of over priced dashikis to me.  I doubt Florida Evans the patriarch of the Good Times gang would ever pay that much for one and she had some hot looking dashikis!!

Bleh. I don't like any of those pieces - that first one Sfclinevandy posted is HIDEOUS (no offense...my opinion only!). Yuck.

Interesting comments about J.Lo's line, too - I've never actually seen a piece in real life (I don't think it's sold here?) but I always wondered how the quality was - whether she really tried to do inexpensive, well-made stuff or whether she just tried to sell crap to gullible types.

I tried on her velour suits around late 2002, when I was hankering over Juicy but couldn't bring myself to spend the money on it. They were terrible quality for the price (prolly $69 for the top and $59 for the pants) and the cut was horrific.

I also owned a shirt from her and I gave it away because the fabric was so rough.
