Question for swimmers
Permalink Closed

I have a $50 GC to Dick's, which I can only use online. I'm thinking of getting a fitness swimsuit because there's a class at my gym I've been wanting to try, but haven't been able to because I only have fashion swimsuits!

First off, does anyone have a Dolfin suit or know about them? They look the cheapest (and I don't want to spend much because I don't even know if I like the swimming classes yet!) but the 1 rating I could find was a 1-star.

Also, I have a sizing question about swimsuits. My chest is several dress sizes larger than the rest of me. The sizing charts on the Dicks site only go by chest size, but I'm afraid that if I get a suit based on my chest that it will be super baggy everywhere else. My chest is 38 inches, so the size chart says I should buy a size 38 swimsuit. But the rest of my body averages out to about a size 6 (which is what I get in stretchy dresses), which is a size 32 swimsuit. If I went with a 34 or 36, do you think I'd be OK?

FWIW these are the suits I'm looking at:

I'd order it in the "right" size and then one size down if the return shipping isn't a factor. I've never had a suit like this so I am not much help. I have to go with "fashion" suits/bikinis as well to fit my stupid boobs. Good luck!

I think they run pretty true to size

I bought a true swimming suit in High School when my body was much more proportional, and it squashed my boobs then. I am now proportioned like you are, so you may want to go try some on (you can always order online to get the discount once you find the right size in store). It's not as convenient, but would be less of a hassle than going through several returns due to wrong sizing.

I would buy a TYR suit, rather than Dolfin. You should be able to find them for pretty good deals. As for sizing, my chest is much larger than the rest of me, but I typically wear a size 32 swimsuit - I think my chest is bigger than yours. You want the suit to fit tight. When you try them on, a good way to tell if they're tight enough is to pull the shoulder straps up as high as they go. If you can reach your ears, good. You don't want the straps to go much past your ears. Another thing to keep in mind is the suits get bigger as soon as you get in the water. It may feel too tight on land, but it will be a different story in the water. Also, the suits get longer as you go up in size. If you don't have a particularly long torso, you need to keep that in mind.

If you have any other questions, let me know! I've been a competitive swimmer, water polo player, and triathlete most of my life.

Thanks everybody! I was trying to avoid trucking out to try them on in person, but it seems like that's what I have to do. Thanks for the tips!!

I was also a competitive swimmer in H.S. I would also recommend TYR or Speedo. I have a Speedo one that I like for the gym - it has some cups built in. In H.S we wold get the tightest fitting one to wear for competing, but I think you'd like to stay TTS or up one size for comfort if you are only taking a class.

My favorite racerbacks were like this type of back - it doesn't shit around and you have a wide range for shoulder motion. And you want to make sure your bum is covered at a comfortable spot - not the most flattering, but you can't be digging for wedgies while you're swimming. hth
