So I was reading this book about petite dressing (I'm 5'1.75" BTW) and it mentioned stuff like no horizontal lines (ex. belts, cuffs, shirt peeking under sweater, etc).  It also mentioned color scheme (matching bag to shoe to earings) and wearing similar colors all throughout.  Of course flats, cropped pants and knee skirts are a no-no.

I'm REALLY short, but all the faux pas are things I love.  I guess I really don't care that much about being short, but am I violating TOO MANY rules?

I am petite, also (5'0"), and I also like wearing the same things.

But I think if you buy clothes that are made specifically for petites or that you can get tailored, I think it looks fine.  I wear knee-length skirts a lot for work, and I don't think it makes me look bad (of course, the heels probably help too).  I also just got some cropped pants, but I took them to a tailor on the advice of the women on here because they looked like highwaters on me, and they look perfect now.

I think it's all about proportions and body type.  If the look is proportioned to your height, it won't look weird, IMO.

honestly I am pretty short too and I think it matters on your size. when I was a size 10, yeah all those things applied. But now I am a 2/4 and much more proprotioned to my height so it doesn't matter as much. I think that what you read was really too general a statement- it totally depends on the overall look.

I have a friend who is about 5'2" and she wears all the things you spoke of. I have never looked at her and thought "My, that girl is too short to be wearing those cropped pants" I think if the clothes are proportioned for you they will look great. And if you love your outfit you will feel great, so rock on!!

I agree, it makes sense to follow those rules if you're a size 10. I used to be a 10 and I didn't follow the rules...when I look at pictures of myself from middle school and high school, it's not pretty. Now I'm basically a size 4 and I'm fairly well-proportioned for my height. The only thing I don't wear is cropped pants and that's only because they hit at the widest part of my muschular calves, not because I'm short.

The whole suggestion of essentially a monochrome color scheme and matching bag to shoe to earrings? Oyyyy...I break those rules with a passion!

i think that those tips are guidelines to follow if you want to "appear taller". no, you are not going to look horrible in cropped pants just because you are 5' 1.75", but they will not accentuate length like a pair of pants cut longer worn with heels will.

i'm not so tall and i break virtually every rule out there that "they" make up for us. i guess i've just embraced my shortness.

also, i agree with the proportion theory stated above by fellow petites.
