I think that liking where you will move does depend on the city, but also I think that alot of it has to do with the attitude you have before you move there. After I got married, I moved up to Indiana while my husband finishes up school... I wasn't too excited on... ironically enough.. moving out of Texas, so it was harder and because of this took longer for me to get into the groove of things. So... my advice is that if it turns out that you both have to (not by choice) move to Texas, then def. make an initial effort to do everything possible to get out and become a part of the community and take advantage of what the area has to offer. As for me... our time in Indiana is coming to an end... and we are happy and ready to mave back to Austin... but we did enjoy taking advantage of our time here.

Okay, I have gained a little distance and perspective on this and have picked the brains of as many people as I could find (both online and IRL) and have come up with a few observations.  I understand that maybe not everyone will agree, but these are things that we've heard/concluded:

If you grew up in Texas, you might not be able to imagine living anywhere else.

If you did not grow up in Texas/move there at some point/have contact with/or knowledge of it in your young life, it may be too big of an adjustment to make comfortably.

Texas is unlike any other place in the US - it has it's own very distinct sub-culture.

The big city-ness of Houston overtakes the culture of Texas itself, meaning that Houston is not the best example of Texas as a place/culture.  There are good places and not so good places, just like everywhere else.

I'm feeling pretty optimistic about our situation now.  FH applied for 4 jobs last night and will apply for more as he finds out about them.  We're seriously condisdering the Boston area as the pay is good, the cost of living is doable in the surrounding area, and there is are multiple schools there for me.  I'll let y'all know if anything big develops

They're really beautiful this year. I know there's some secret to good bluebonnets having to do with the weather but I don't know what it is. Whatever it is, it happened because everywhere green is covered in wildflowers.

That's what they're called. I'm iffy about Texas during the summer (who wouldn't be!) but in the few weeks when it's really spring, I can't imagine being anywhere else. It's so beautiful. My favorite wildflowers are buttercups and winecups - they're just so pretty and delicate looking.

LMonet- you are absolutely right about Houston.  Its very big, really fast paced, not such a great example of the whole state.  Austin is awesome, but from what i've heard gets pretty expensive to live there.  I dont know that for sure though, could be just like anywhere else.  My sister & I were born here & she moved to Austin when she was 18, then moved to Santa Fe.  her & her husband lived there since, but they briefly moved back last summer & only stuck around for about a year.  They HATED Houston.  They like the relaxed enviornment of Santa Fe, or anywhere smaller and less hectic.  For me, I really like living here.  Maybe b/c Im used to it  :)

We say y'all, we can turn shit into a four syllable word, we love our margaritas & migas, and we love our spring wildflowers, especially bluebonnets. We're also super-friendly (wouldn't dare cut someone off on the highway without a polite wave) and in Austin at least, there are way more Ws with a slash through them than there are Ws. It's not a perfect place to live, by any means, but it is truly unique and the people who live here are very loyal to it and proud of it. That said, it's not for everyone. Your FH might learn to love it, like a lot of people, or he might think it's just too different, like a lot of people. I hope he gives it a chance so he can at least be happy while he's here, even if y'all (see!) don't end up moving here. Good luck either way!  "

Blubirde, now you're making me feel sappy and nostalgic too!  I went to school in Austin (UT) and will always have a special place in my heart for that city.  Migas at Trudy's, running on Lake Austin, ice cream at Amy's.  One of my favorite places was this bar, but the name is escaping me right now - it was right on Lake Austin and they had the BEST Mexican Martinis.  Cedar-something?

I came to Austin to go to UT also and I've stayed because I like it so much. I think the place you're talking about is the Cedar Door. It's moved to downtown now but still has the best mexican martinis. I used to love going to Trudys with friends and having mexican martinis in the middle of the day (when I was in school). That is pretty much my idea of perfect on a lazy, spring Tuesday afternoon, don't you think?

Cedar Door, that's the place!  Those drinks were soooo good.

I remember those few weeks in early spring, before it would get really hot, when it was just so much fun to be outside.  Is that coffee place Mozart's still there?  We would sit outside and study there a lot.  I think I just didn't go to classes for those few weeks.  God, I miss those days!

P.S. Sorry LMonet for hijacking your post!

Sorry LMonet!

Mozart's is still there. I remember coming to Austin and being shocked at how many different coffeeshops there were here. Mojo's, the Metro, Spiderhouse, Flightpath, Mozarts - and none of them were Starbucks! I couldn't believe it. Now there are a lot more Starbucks but those places are still here, thank goodness.

Did you ever go to the Shady Grove the day after drinking to cure your hangover? Or Magnolia or Kerbey Lane the night after drinking? Hmm... maybe I'll do that tonight.

I can't believe I'm getting this mushy and sentimental about Austin!  I had forgotten about Kerbey Lane (and the Kerbey queso!) - I think that 99% of the time that I ate there, it was between 2 and 5 am and I wasn't necessarily sober.   Ahh, good times...

Seriously, now you're making me want to move there!  Or at least visit sometime soon.  But I have to visit in the spring - I may melt if I go there during the summer.

Or come in September and October. Those days are nice, too. I don't think I've ever been to Kerbey Lane sober either... how sad is that??? But the summer is nice because you can spend all day out on the lake. Ah, good times.

See LMonet? Austin's a great place. Look at all these people getting sentimental over it!
