please help pick out shoes and bag for dress - IRL pics!!
Permalink Closed

trying to decide which shoes/bag to wear w/ my navy nanette lepore dress (which i posted about recently).  the shoe options are burgundy patent or red patent.  i think i prefer the burgundy b/c the shoes are much more comfortable and i just don't really love the red, but the burgundy doesn't really make the outfit pop (unless i were to get a clutch in a totally dif color, like olive and ivory snakeskin, say).  i am attaching pics of 6 different options - pls vote on your favorite one.

1-patent burgundy shoes w/ patent burgundy faux snakeskin clutch (may be too matchy)
2-patent burgundy shoes w/ silver clutch
3-patent red shoes w/ red clutch (also may be too matchy)
4-patent red shoes w/ silver clutch
5-red t straps w/ silver clutch
6-red t straps w/ red clutch

thanks for looking!

I like this one:

I agree that the burgundy doesn't add a whole lot to the outfit. I mean, they're pretty, but then there's not really a lot of color. And I'm partial to color :)

I'm always wary of trying to add interest or color with a clutch, because for the most part I don't carry my clutch around with me all night. It's either on the table, under the table, or left on my seat while I hit the dancefloor (depending on where you're going, of course!). I mean, no harm in having a fun clutch, but I wouldn't ever depend on a bag to liven up my outfit singlehandedly.

I like #4 as well. I tend to think of navy and burgundy as pseudo-neutrals (a la WNTW), and together nothing pops... and I agree with Kelly's logic about a clutch.

okay so it's unanimous so far on the red pumps/silver clutch combination.  kelly and sandy you both make very good points about clutches and neutrals.  thanks and more opinions are welcome!!

Another vote for #4. By the way, I have a navy dress that's been surprisingly versatile. These are some of the ways I've worn it:

* with a chunky citrine necklace
* with magenta accessories
* with a green cami peeking out
* with a tangerine (orange-red)/ivory print scarf
* with tan heels that have a little platform

Do you have a closeup pic of the dress? (sorry if you posted it before, I missed it!). I couldn't really get a good look at the fabric or neckline.

I like #2 because I think the clutch pops more. #4 is nice, but I feel the shoes are competing a bit with the clutch. I'm not sure which is the "feature," the shoes or the bag. #2 seems more elegant and grownup to me.

I like #4 and then #2. I agree with Suasoria that maybe the clutch pops more in number 2 so it kind of depends whether you prefer the color pop to be from the shoes or the clutch maybe. I love the burgundy shoes but agree they don't add much pop.
Love all the shoes, the clutches and the dress BTW!

#4. Maybe a chunky red necklace to pick up the shoe color, too?

thanks everyone for the help.  i am having major problems with this decision - mainly i think b/c i don't love any of the options.  nonetheless, this post helped me narrow down my options significantly.  i started out liking the burgundy shoes.  i loved them in the store b/c i just love that color and the shoes are comfortable and very good quality.  so basically i loved the shoe, but not with the dress.  i feel like with the dress they made my legs look too pasty and didn't pop, possibly b/c  navy and burgundy are pseudo-neutrals, as sandy pointed out.  then that left only the red shoes option, but i'm not loving that either for the following reasons:

1-i don't really like the combination of red and navy, i think b/c those were my school colors growing up;
2-the red shoes will probably be considered too "flashy" for the event, which is a baptism at 10 am in a catholic church (my son's, so i have to look good); and
3-i feel like it makes the dress look like a flight attendant's uniform.

Soooo - i found two new prs of shoes today that i am going to try.  one is a brown snakeskin peeptoe and the other a grey and beige snakeskin pump.  i found a simple bronze clutch (that i really like) to go with the brown shoes, but not sure about a clutch to wear with the other shoes (but i like the brown better anyway, though they're not as comfortable).  if i'm not too lazy and/or i'm stumped again, i'll post new pics.

anyway, thanks everyone for your time.  even though i'm not wearing any of the shoes or bags, your opinions helped me arrive to the conclusion that i need more options!

oh and vanessa - i posted a pic of the dress somewhere, i'll try to find it.  also, i love the ways in which you wear your navy dress and i def. want to try them the next time i wear it- thanks!

phew that was a long post, sorry.

The dress looks fabulous on you! And I think the brown snakeskin pumps and bronze clutch sound cute.

thanks for the encouragement, FP!  i tried on those shoes today with the purse and clutch and i like it - finally!

oh, i'm about to post another question but in case you see this - should i wear sheer nude hose with the peeptoes - or is that a no-no??  not sure if i can get away with no hose at this event but i have never in my life worn hose with any type of open toed shoe (even though i've seen in mags, etc.).
