dresses that look like seperates

I keep seeing these all over the place and I'm not sure what to make of them. What do you think? Chic, or cheap?

It depends on the colors and where they "split". I like some of them and some I outright hate. That one to me would be rather bland mainly because of the white top not really matching the bottom skirt fit wise - the skirt is nice and fitted looking and the top looks like a shell you'd wear under a suit - a little less fitted.

seems like something's wrong with the voting feature...

I guess, in the example you show, it doesn't look bad to me.  I'm not a big fan of faux layering though (cuffs and collar attached to a sweater so it looks like a shirt underneath.)

yeah, that's the thing. I usually hate faux layering too (it seems cheap to me) but for some reason these dresses draw me in (but then I usually get closer and think "ugh no") I think the appeal might have to do with the fact that I love the skirt and top look, but I hate the inevitable bunching of the shirt around my hips?

Not a fan. I don't know, I feel like if you want to look like you're wearing separates, you should just wear separates. You'd get a lot more use out of your clothes that way, too.

I have a dress like that that I bought a couple of years ago. I like the look, but some of the dresses can look cheap so it depends on how it's designed. Here's the one I got by Milly ...

I love that Milly one! Super cute! But the first one posted, no... reminds me of something my mom would of worn in the 80's and not in a good retro way.

I agree.  I like the look on ones like the Milly one.  I think I like it because having one piece achieves a seamless fitted look that two pieces can't do sometimes.  For example, if I were to do that with two pieces I would either have to tuck in a shirt which always bunch on me or leave it untucked which doesn't create that single line high on the waist.

On that particular dress I'm not feeling it, but in general I don't mind them. For a while I was really anti faux layering, and I passed up a lot of cute stuff because of it. It seems like "fake clothes" to me, but in the end I'm won over by the fact that I don't have to deal with the bunching.

hate em!!  and i keep seeing them everywehere!  although i think i could make an exception for the milly one that was posted - that is the only one i've seen that i've liked.
