To all the "Fine" straight-haired ladies...
Permalink Closed

I've had fine, limp hair since forever.  I thought cutting my hair into a bob would take some weight off and give volume but it really didn't!!!  I've used lots of volumizing shampoos and products but it seems like when I leave the house my hair looks fine, then when a gust of wind strikes or the minute I sweat a tad, I am left with limp locks again.

I've also tried "backcombing" but am scared that a if my style gets mussed, people will see huge knots under my hair and think I'm homeless or something.

The closest I've come to a decent volumizing product has been Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray.  Can anyone share their entire routine, from shampoo to hairspray of what works best for them?

I have super thin hair and just recently cut my hair into a bob of sorts.
I use a volumizing mouse that I'll post the name of when I get home. But what I've found is just blow drying your hair with a round brush and gently lifting it from the roots will give you alot of body.

Two things struck me, when thinking about this post.

1. Sometimes, unfortunately, you can't make your hair do something it just won't do. For instance, my hair gets a curve right below my ears. I have straight, straight hair, except for that one little baby curve. No matter what I do, no matter how much I straighten my hair, that curve is gonna appear by mid-day. Have you talked to a (good) stylist about what styles would suit your hair type best? Maybe you just need a stylist to put in some texture by using a razor instead of scissors.

2. Perhaps it's a product issue, maybe too much volumizer or too much conditioner? Maybe it's not that you're using the wrong product, but too much of it?

I do totally feel where you are coming from. My hair, while the actual strands are thinner than average, is technically full because I have more strands per inch. Not that anybody has counted, but there is a difference between the thickness of the actual strands and the thickness of the actual hair as a total. Does that make sense? I'm currently adjusting to longer hair. I have had short (like Annie Lenox short) hair for almost ten years and about a year ago I decided to see what would happen if I grew it. I've been lucky to find a great stylist who has been working with me to discover what happens when my hair gets long. I now have hair almost past my shoulders and bangs. Anyway, my point is....I have thin hair, but because I have a lot of it, it tends to get weighted down as well no matter what I do. I'm learning to live with the fact that my hair will never have amazing bounce or volume and instead going in the opposite direction for sleek and straight.

Whats made a difference for me is getting shorter layers in the back and long layers in the front. I use conditioner mid scalp to the ends. Currently, I'm using Sunsilk daring volume anti-flat plumping creme. I put it on after I shower and then I just blow dry my hair.  Have you checked out youtube videos? There's many tutorials on how to add volume to your hair.

I feel you. I have always wanted to be a "big-haired girl." It was not in the cards. No product marketed as "volumizing" ever worked to my satisfaction.

Like Relrel, I have learned to embrace "sleek and straight" - which I think can be classic and chic. Maybe there's a cut/style out there that will make you appreciate it - something more angular or dramatic, which I think someone with your hair can pull off better than others.

I've had pretty good luck with Big Sexy Hair brand volumizing gel.

I don't have fine straight hair, but my mom does and she is always looking for the newest volumizing product.  I picked up this one at Target:

bigsexyhair what a tease: backcomb in a bottle.

It has some serious hold.  I tried it to get a little bump at my crown and it worked amazingly well on my heavy hair, so I would imagine it would be terrific for fine hair.  It does get crunchy though, so if you want "run your fingers through it" hair, this won't do.

I've always had very fine hair and take after my mother who started to loose her hair in her 50s. I have the stylist use a razor on the ends of my hair which seems to let it lie just right. Even when my hair is windblown, I can easily pat it down in place.

Although my hair is mostly straight, It has a slight wave in the under layer of hair near the roots. I've recently started washing it a night and letting it air dry. The next morning, I have (some) body on the top, and use a small straightener just on the ends. This works just as well as trying to wash and style in the morning and actually saves me some time. (Since I get up at 5am)

I've also found that coloring my hair helps because it dries it out a little. I only use conditioner once a week, and just near the ends.

You guys are fab!!! On Fri I watched a couple of You Tube videos..

One featured a salon suggesting using a fierce volumizer on roots and a more lowkey one all around, then did a great blow dry.

I then watched a video on using velcro rollers for volume.

I actually own the product in the first video, so I dusted off my bottle, went to the drug store, bought clarifying shampoo and a $1 set of velcro rollers. I did both routines before heading out on Sat night and results were great! Perfect volume, with sexy waves. I think I'm going to incorporate the curlers into my regular routiune.

D I couldn't find the film icon.. where is it?!??!?!

Ding ding!  Razoring the ends of my bob is the only way my hair behaves when it's shorter.

I have an angled razored bob with long side-swept bangs, it's hairline-length in the back and chin-length in the front, razored in the bottom all over with heavier layers in the back.  I think the biggest things that have helped me (besides the cut) are to lightly spray with volumizing spray, blow dry, flat iron, and then use this stufff from BedHead called Funkifier on the ends/underneath.  Even with just a tiny bit of that funkifier, the next day I can run my fingers through and restyle, which was previously unheard of for me!

I am currntly trying a root lifter or somehing to try to get rid of the flatness my hair has.

Elle- is that Bedhead product a volumising spray? I have never found a great one?

I should try the velcro rollers thing but I'm never sure when to put them in- when hair is not quite dry I think? Need to watch some youtube vids!

No, it's sort of a creme/gel/wax hybrid.  I've heard pretty good things about the Bumble&Bumble volumizing spray, but it's sort of expensive.

I agree with the other girls - tyr to make the best of what you've got and ask your stylist for a cut that will maximize volume.  You may want to try hair extensions - they are all the rage where I live.

the film icon looks like a little strip of film -- it's in the editor portion of your reply/post.  just click on it, and a field where you can paste the video url will pop up.

I think you need to click "Use Advanced Editor" below your post text field.

my sister has really fine hair, and she got a great cut that really maximized and added the look of fullness. I know she also uses a large round brush and blow drys her hair upside down to create volume.

I don't agree with the hair extensions idea for fine hair - my sister-in-law has them with her fine dark hair and you can see big chunks of her white scalp, especially when she puts her hair up.  (Uck sorry)
