The Chatbox - Question

So I've been using it to keep up with people's new posts like it is intended to be used.  I've noticed a few times that people will have their avatar pop up and a statement/question will appear but it won't really be a post.  What is that and how do you respond?

It can be used also as sort of an Instant Messenger.
The white box on top is where you would type a reply.
