Ideas to Revive ST

Here are some ideas from off the top of my head:

Ones that may require D's help:
D - Since one of your frustrations has to do with all the work you dedicate to ST, what do you think about trimming the forum down to a smaller number of categories?  Nothing huge, but just going a bit leaner.  Maybe you close the 5--8 least popular sections.  That's what companies and organizations do when they're experiencing low sales and/or a lack of interest.

Also, what do you think about adding a section that is open to only registered ST-ers (just like the ThreadStyle one is).  This new section would be a place in which we could go and write whatever we want whenever we want.  Opinions, gripes, secrets, epic-complaints, unpopular views, whatever.  It would have a minimal number of rules, and since only ST-ers can see it, maybe members would feel freer to let it all hang out.  Maybe this "secret section" would spark interest and more traffic, more members...  ??  I don't know  ??

Could it be time to focus only on fashion, health/beauty, and home/garden?
 - - but keep one "help-me" section in which people can get advice and still be able to vent about whatever strikes them.

Think of all the magazines that are going out of business.  Are there any topical or novelty voids we could fill on ST?  For example, if Lucky went out of business, we could start our own version of their Now & Later section or Does this Outfit Work?

"Community Service" Ideas
I'm trying to think of an additional way in which all of the regular members and motivated new members can "buy into" ST.
- Have a contest to see who can refer the most new members
- ST Superlatives (Juiciest post of the month, coolest posted article of the month, most dedicated poster of the month, prettiest thread-style outfit of the month, etc.)
- Zombie thread - once a month or once a week, one person has to repost an old thread and make a case for re-starting dialogue on it.
- (not super motivating but still an idea...) Chore lists?  Regulars and motivated newbies agree to take on at least one chore a month that will help D with the upkeep of the site. Examples -  a.) one person agrees to check for broken links one month, b.) another person agrees to be the forum cheerleader--someone who encourages responses to low-action posts (bumps up, asks trigger questions to spark more conversation, replies when no one else does), c.) someone is responsible for summarizing and posting monthly ST News - like a simple newsletter containing commentary on popular posts of the month, announcing winners of contests, featuring a cool accessory, posting birthday reminders and milestones/good news (So-and-so had a baby boy on February 4th...).
- Happy news thread - One person per week or every 2 weeks is charged with finding an interesting, good-news piece online or in another form of media and posting it on ST.
- I don't want to discourage posts, but maybe we could try to lay-off posting some of the heartwrenching, ugly, dramatizing/traumatizing posts--unless there is a real discussion to be had from them.  Chances are good everyone already knows about the family of four who crashed through a barrier at a 250 ft. cliff and ... - it has probably been covered five hundred times in one hour by CNN, Fox, MSNBC, NPR-even, local news, BBC, etc.

Okay.  It's 5:00 and I'm going home.  :)

Anyone have any additional ideas?

Oh, i just saw this and posted something similar in D's thread.  I think less categories would drive more traffic to the ones we do have.  I love travel and home and food but if they weren't separate, maybe there would be more response?  Just like a ... Life category?

Thank you for your suggestions.  I don't want to modify the forum or enlist "workers" at this time, with the exception of those who are contributing content for the general site.

I am doing a lot outside the forum to drum up traffic already. We need active posters to make them want to stick around when they stop by.

If you want to drum up posting, please be my guest to initiate the following:
"ST Superlatives (Juiciest post of the month, coolest posted article of the month, most dedicated poster of the month, prettiest thread-style outfit of the month, etc.)
- Zombie thread - once a month or once a week, one person has to repost an old thread and make a case for re-starting dialogue on it."

The forum is what you, as members, make it.  If no one posts, then the forum will die.  That's the truth of it.  Who wants to participate in a forum where no one posts?

I like your ideas! Especially "Zombie thread" giggle.gif

Would anyone be interested in "outfit challenges"? Like, say every week or every month someone would be in charge of posting a challenge like "make an outfit inspired by your favorite fairy tale character" or "create an outfit with the colors of your favorite flower" or whatever, and then you could make an outfit (in real-life like threadstyle or in polyvore) and then the winner could make the prompt for the next round?

I don't really think this dilutes traffic. we used to have shitloads of traffic with these categories.  bottom line is, no one posts anymore.  no posts = forum dies.

Well, I'm sure it's not the main culprit, but I admit I forget about some of them sometimes.  If I didn't have to click around as much, I'd probably just answer whatever popped up :)

I feel like that too, BUT I think it's because right now there aren't so many people posting. So yeah, doing so much clicking seems like a bit of work to just read one post. But when ST inevitably starts filling back up again, I think all those seperate forums are really handy because if I'm in a fashiony mood, I don't have to wade through a ton of other convos

I forget about the career section all the time.  I understand your point about how more fresh content in one place could keep you more engaged.

I also agree, that when posting picks back up, we will want the categories.  The categories were created out of necessity in the beginning, so let's keep them at the ready for when things pick up :)

I don't know about you guys but during this grey, cold winter I sure as hell have been watching a lot of TV and it seems like we don't chat about our favorite shows or movies anymore.  Maybe this can be a combined effort by all to try and post about what you watched the night before and get some interest started for the day to talk about shows?  Right now I am watching LOST, Gossip Girl, True Beauty, The Bachelor (yes D, I did end up getting hooked lol)

I really want to watch the Oscars this year because I heart Hugh Jackman!!

I was actualy just thinkign about how we used to have some posts like this... like "create a fantasy outfit with a budget of $5,000" or "make two outfits with one piece." They were always fun and inspiring.

What do you guys think about a regular posting (daily, weekly, whatever) about reworking an old outfit? Like "how to freshen up the basic, white button down" or "how to liven up a black cardi" or "create a new outfit with all your regs and one less than $20 newbie," etc., etc., etc.

One thing I used to love back when was when people would post about "inspired by" in mall or budget stores. I always knew if F21 had an Anthro look-alike, you guys would know and I could go grab it before it got away. Or if a mall store was doing a YSL-esque line (as if), it would be posted here. I'm not familiar enough to start those kinds of post but I love, love, loved them when they were around.
