What kind of car should I buy? (and an unfortunate job update)...
Permalink Closed

So...I am losing my job at the end of the month (again!).  My entire team (of over 100) is being let go and the worst part is that I will be losing my company car too.  I will need to buy another car but I have no idea what I want.

What cars do you like and what cars do you dislike?  I will probably buy something slightly used in order to stay out of debt.  I need some ideas!  TIA!

I'm really pretty uninformed about cars, but I have to say that I have a diesel Jetta and I totally love it! The gas mileage is awesome - now that gas prices are down it's not such a big deal, but when they inevitably climb back up again, I'm set!

I love my Pontiac G6. It is a midsize sedan with some pick up and decent gas mileage. The first year they came out (2006) was a not so good year with some items they had to recall/fix but mine which is a 2007 hasn't had anything recalled or any issues.

Oh hon! I'm so sorry about the job situation!!!

I heart my VW passat, we've owned 3 and love them. You should be able to find a used one with no problem. If you go that route, my hubby knows a lot about them so feel free to pm me any questions... or if you need anything at all!

Ouch, that's too bad about the job (and I heart my Prius).

I think a used Toyota is a good bet, most have great gas mileage and good engines. My husband's Honda that he refuses to give up is 15 years old and has had few repair issues, but my toyota gets much better mileage.

I'm sorry about your jobcry

Sorry about the job issue!

I drive a Toyota Matrix and love it.  I can tell you that two full-size toilets, in their boxes, will fit in the hatch!  It's built on a Corolla chasis, so it's small enough to park in compact spaces and get decent mileage.  I have a 2005.

Aside from the Matrix, I think a Corolla would be an economical choice too (and reliable).

I am so sorry to hear about your job loss :(

I would go for something practical that does not require a lot of expensive maintenance. I have a toyota camry, and while it is not glamorous - it is very reliable.

I think anything Toyota or Honda. My Honda is ten years old, and I've never once (knock on wood) had any issues with it. It gets amazing gas mileage as well. My parents have held on to my sister's old Toyota Corolla and it's at over 220,000 miles.

Sorry about your job :(

I just bought my Mazda 3 and the mileage is great! I bought an '07 used for a great price. When I had to drive a rental though I had the same car Aurora has, it was great also. I wanted a VW but after having some problems with my sisters my dad said it would be too expensive to maintain if we ever had problems with it, since it is hard finding parts and someone to work with them.

I'd also recommend a Honda or a Toyota. I drove my last Civic ('98) until this past year and it was still a great car. I'm currently driving an '08 Civic and it's just as good as my last one. My family has all had Toyotas and loved them too. I'd also recommend looking into Mazdas and Nissans--they both have really good reliability as well.
