New York City!
Permalink Closed

I'm going to in a couple weeks New York for a few days and I'm looking for cool things to do. The boy and I are going together to visit friends who go to school there, but we'll be pretty much on our own during the day (as they have class) and will probably be with a group of friends at night. We've been to New York before and have seen Times Square, etc. And we'll be staying at Columbia, if that matters. Here are our thoughts on what we want to do...

-Go to Artisanal Cheese. I read about it in Food & Dining and I MUST go.
-Joe Coffee to buy cupcakes made by Amy Sedaris.
-Some museums. We want to see art, science, whatever. Any suggestions?
-The aquarium? Does NYC have one? A good one?
-A concert maybe. We'll be there the 15th-19th, anything we should see? We all have fakes, so that is not a problem.
-Shopping. I don't think he can handle too much, but he's not opposed to a few good spots.
-Eat at some celebrity hot spot. What's cool? I only know like Nobu, Pastis, and Butter from US Weekly.
-Random cool NYC things.

i new york!  there are a million and one things to do, but i'm going to focus on art museums because i'm a huge dork.

the met is- obviously- amazing.   it's a must-see if you haven't already been there.

the guggenheim is one of my personal favorites- the building itself is art and they have many important pieces.  lots of kandinsky.

the moma if you like modern art- i haven't been to their new location yet.  the next time i'm in nyc, that's going to be my first stop!

those are obviously the big three.  a good lesser-known choice is the cooper-hewitt national design museum at 91st and 5th (on museum mile).  i went there on a whim a year or two ago and loved it.  they were having a great fashion exhibit.  it's small but definitely worth the trip.

HAVE FUN!

Definitely go to Arisanal!

NY does have a pretty nice aquarium (http://nyaquarium.com/). It's in Coney Island which is way the hell out in Brooklyn but it might be fun if the weather is good. I don't know if the arcades, rides, etc. are open that early though.

Also I think you would like the Museum of Natural History. Have you ever been?
Right now they have an exhibit called Exploring Bolivia's Biodiversity which you might like. They also have the Butterfly Conservatory which I heard mixed things about but it could be fun.

I second the Cooper Hewitt. I also love love love the Frick.

I'm trying to think of shows that you might be into. Ben Lee is playing on Monday the 18th with Har Mar Superstar at Southpaw in Brooklyn. That's usually 18+ so you won't have to worry.
Oh and this crazy band from Ohio that I know called Gil Mantera's Party Dream is playing at Sin-e on April 16th. I don't know that you'd like them musically but their show is a trip. Check out their site and you'll see what I mean.

Other club schedules to check out: Northsix in Williamsburg and Knitting Factory (their site isn't working right now though). Also check ticketweb.com for lists.

I'll try to think of some more things to do.

topping this because i will be in nyc around the same time for a hair show. (april 17-19)

do we have a nyc definitive shopping guide? (i know the local guides are in progress) i have been to nyc a bunch (the most time ive spent there is a month) so i'm familiar with areas, but i always seem to gravitate to the same stores so i would definitely like to look into new places.

also maddie, lucky you going to see of montreal! they are pretty fun. (i unfortunately won't be in town in time to see them)

Maddie - That's cool about Of Montreal. I was going to post about that show specifically but I wasn't sure if you'd like them or not. Anyway North6 is cool, it's usually 18+ and it's really easy to get to by subway. I'd recommend buying tickets in advance though because it could sell out.

For shopping, Lucky's local guide is on their site. Definitely check NYmetro.com.

Umm maybe you'd be into Punk/Metal karaoke? A few places have it now but the most famous night is at Arlene Grocery on the Lower East Side. It's Mondays at 9. Karaoke with a live band. I've only gone once and it was years ago but I think it's probably still fun.

I had some more ideas last night but now I'm blanking.

yay fun trip to nyc! i saw of montreal years ago at maxwell's (which is in hoboken)...... i feel old when i think of how long ago that was.

everyone's definitely recommended some great places! have you decided on a chic restaurant yet? i would say go to florent instead of pastis. there is a much younger crowd there than pastis and it's less expensive. if you're going all out and going to for people watching, try spice market. it's also in the meat packing district and it's crazy inside.

feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions. definitely go to artisnal! ask the fromagier to pick cheese for you.!!!!!!!!!!!!
