Fumigating - what about my clothes and stuff?
Permalink Closed

Hi Ladies!

Our condo is being fumigated starting Mon.  My DH went to the meeting and said they only told us to special bag our food and medicine.  My co-worker had his house fumigated before and he said they bagged all sorts of stuff:  all their clothes, blankets, towels, anything that comes in contact with your face, mouth etc.  Now I'm really paranoid.  should I bag all our kitchen appliances, pots and pans, dishes, too?  DH said they said no bagging clothes, etc.  but do you think the toxins get into your clothes and then we'll wear them and something will happen?  My co-worker said they washed everything (clothes, blankets) afterwards, even when they were bagged.  But my our clothes are mostly all dry clean only...

They only gave us 3 sets of the special bags.  I might go to Home Depot to see if I can get more.

Or do you think my co-worker went overboard and I should just bag food and meds?

TIA

I have no actual scientific proof, but fumigating to me says "yucky, smelly chemicals full of nasty poison" and would want to bag up everything possible. I would totally bag absolutely everything I could get a bag around. I think that in this instance, it's better safe than sorry, right? I mean, you don't want to find out that there was something in the fumigation chemicals that got into your closet with your favorite sweater which gives you a horrible rash, right?

I too would think I'd bag anything and everything fabric. I think pots, pans etc could just be put in some soapy water and be ok, I mean they aren't really porus to where they'd absorb any chemicals... fabrics on the other hand are. And I too like relrel, have no scientific proof. Just better safe than sorry.

thanks girls! but bad news - DH said they told everyone in the meeting that no garment bags or multiple bags allowed. They would cut them open if we have them. S omething about trapping gasses in the condo... :( I will be packing up most of my blankets and quilts in my car and to my parents' house as much as I can. thanks

That's my suggestion too - take out everything you can, including bedding, towels, etc. When you get back, wash dishes and stuff in hot soapy water. Honestly this would freak me out royally, so I'd be leaving the windows open for weeks and steam-cleaning the upholstery, but I'm a wacko about chemicals, so, yeah.
