25+, miniskirts?
Permalink Closed

Okay, so I was going through my spring stuff yesterday and when I tried on my denim mini and looked in the mirror I just felt unsettled. I think i'm now too old (28) for minis. Have any of you "older" women given up minis? Opinions?

And then to buttress the feeling I had yesterday, I saw a woman (late 30's) today in a mini and thought "ew." It just reinforced my notion that it's time to let them go.

Imo, mini-skirt wearing is more determined by shape than age. I know some 20 year olds who don't have the legs for it, and I know someone in her late 30's with perfect legs who would look great in a mini...

i'm 35, recently married and i still wear minis. they're just not as short as they used to be. and i'm pretty tall and have disproportionately long legs that still look pretty good. man, i can't wait until a real spring/summer and not the schizoid weather we've been having in nyc.

ITA.

It's also about cut and style -- I wouldn't wear something like this: because it just seems too young (for me anyway).

but I'd wear a nicely cut, not-obscenely-short denim mini like this one anytime:

What Halleybird said. (about cut and style). I'm 37 and I have a mini very similar to what she posted (though I don't have her loooong legs...~sighs~), and I'm comfortable in it - and don't seem to get a lot of laughter at my expense when I wear it (at least, not that I've noticed )

Heck yeah. I am approaching 34 and I love myself in minis! It has to do with your shape/legs, not age. I happen to have excellent legs - they're short, but they're shapely and slim.

And nobody at any age looks good in one that is too hoochie or tight. I mean, be stylish about it. Also, it's about proportions - short skirt, then don't wear a tight or skimpy top.

I agree with all the "pro-mini" girls who are 25 and up. I'm 28, and I've got good legs and I wear denim mini's a LOT in the summer. But I agree with Halleybird - I wouldn't wear that other thing on my best day. Hee hee.

I agree with the other girls - I am 32 & don't wear them due to thigh size, it has nothing to do with my age!!

I agree with everything that has been said! I'm only 24 right now (25 in october), but I will be wearing whatever i feel comfortable in for as long as I want. I think wearing minis (no matter what your age) depends on many factors:
-cut/fit/style of skirt
-body shape
-total outfit (ie, no hoochie shirts/tarty high heels - "hooker gear")
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:
-confidence - If you don't FEEL like you look good, you won't (constantly squirming/tugging at the skirt, slouching, etc

Also, this past summer, I saw this older, slender woman (not stick thin; with gorgeous silver hair - in her 60's maybe? It was hard to tell) who looked so beautiful! She was wearing a shorter skirt - not a micro mini or anything - with a collared shirt/blazer and she looked smashing/elegant/ and classy. I also saw millions of 15/16 year olds wearing little micro minis with hoochie shirts; they all looked like jail-bait hookers to me. The ones with larger legs looked even worse. That type of outfit looks bad on anyone.

I'm over 25+ and I wear them occasionally but I look quite a bit younger than I really am. I pretty much agree with what everyone said, although I can't imagine wearing them myself when I'm over 35. I think katya summed it up best! maybe it's obvious, but I just want to add about the legs thing, the skin on your legs should be nice too. I saw this 40ish woman the other day, not wearing a miniskirt but a regular knee-length skirt and she had varicose (or spider?) veins all over her legs. it was really frightening. like, lady ever heard of self-tanner or body makeup? or hose, anything.

What I was trying to say was that a degree of modesty has kicked in with me. I have scrawny legs and look good in minis, but I feel like now that I am married and "older" my lower thigh area is private-or something.   Does that make sense?
