I agree that it depends more on the item alot of times. I have shirts and pants from Abercrombie and Express that have held up as well as some of the stuff I have spent way more on. I like C &C tanks. They are a little longer than most so they look better if your jeans are kinda low. I like brands like Betsey Johnson, they have great girlie stuff that makes you feel cute even if you are having a bad day, BCBG, makes great dresses. Those have all held up for me. As far as jeans I have worn hardly anything but 7's for the last three years, and so far so good with me. I have not, knock on wood, had a pair mess up. I say if you have enough of the everyday stuff you need, just save up and only buy things you absolutely love then you know you will be able to use them for a long time.

I have to say, I never buy designer items, cuz I'm super cheap and it's actually my mom's money.    My "average" clothes last a long time, after 5 years, my old navy shirt's seam fell apart, but it's just a great basic, I don't wanna throw it out.  If I have anything "good quality" it was given to me, and those have fallen apart too.  But like the other person said, just be more selective and you'll get your dollar's worth.

I have to say that I agree with halleybird and whoever else said that it's not about brand, but about material and construction. Of course, with higher end brands, you would expect better construction and material, but when shopping at the mall, you have to examine things carefully.

When at the mall, I always try to buy natural fabrics.  If I see a cute camisole and I discover that it's made of some polyester blend, I put it back.  I prefer silk camis, if at all possible.  Also, cotton, cashmere or silk sweaters are my favorites. I do have some acrylics that have held up okay, but in general, I prefer natural fibers.  I don't wear wool b/c it makes me itchy. Also, I don't tend to wear cheap accessories.  All of my jewelry is made of real gold, silver and gemstones (mostly b/c I design jewelry and I have a ton of it) and cheap shoes are usually a no-no for me (although I do have a few exceptions in my closet). It's really all about mixing the lower end with higher end, the mall with the boutiques with some Target thrown in there .  That's what makes a wardrobe interesting.

I have a plain white C & C tank top that I wear a ton under things.  Is it worth it?  Maybe not.  But I haven't yet found one that I like as much, and I think its not worth my time to keep looking.  Plus I dont want to waste $10 here or there on a quest for another one.  That said, I have 6 C & C items and all were on sale.  If you cant find a sale, at least try to find a discount code.  I can guarantee you'll find one for at least 20% off.  I would start off with a basic color or a classic tank in your favorite color.  I don't own their regular t-shirts, but i've heard they're ok, not that great.  As far as other clothes, I'm really rethinking how I feel about expensive clothes.  For a little top, its not worth it to me to spend $100 on a designer label unless I've specifically been drooling over that top.  I check this site and others for inspiration and often times, my favorite tops aren't the most expensive ones.  It's only when you start browsing Lucky or Saks that you get in trouble because a complete outfit there could be thousands.  I think spending on classics and nice shoes and accessories is the way to go.  I have found great things at cheapie stores like forever 21 (I agree wholeheartedly with the natural fibers sentiment) but I tend to pick classic things even there!  I got a white polo there with heart pointelle detail there and its awesome!  I buy a lot of things on sale too, unless its a basic.  I like J Crew but I usually check eBay first.  Some shoes I like from there are always on eBay for around $85 instead of $150.  I don't think its worth the price unless its something you can't live without.  My favorite jeans are AG, i will stand by them forever.  I have three pairs (2 are the exact same light washed jeans).  I like random boutique brands like petro zillia or mona & holly, but check eBay first.  Hope to help!
