Anyone ever used PODS for a move? I'm thinking it would be the best way for us to move since I'd rather not drive a U-Haul across the country. I know a few people who know people who used PODS and from I can tell, it was okay for them. But I thought I'd check with some more people? So, anyone here ever use them?
Also, what was the approximate cost? I tried to get an estimate online, but they want me to call them for info. Annoying! We'll be moving from PA to CA.
My sister used them about 3 years ago. She didn't have the best experience (had to wait for like an extra week before her stuff got down here), but I think the idea of PODS is really good. Most people I have heard from had a fine time with them.
Yeah, I think the drawback is that they're slightly less flexible with travel times and are a little expensive, but you don't have to drive yourself and they're more flexible than moving companies that throw your stuff in a segmented truck with other peoples stuff and take a month to get there.
And, for the love of all that is holy, do no use Uhaul. Please - save yourself the misery! We had a much better experience with Budget, and Penske is even better (but more expensive). You could also hire movers on both ends to help you load/unload stuff if you wanted (we did). And to be honest we really enjoyed our semi-cross-country moves done in moving trucks. They're pretty comfortable to sit in, the scenery was new, etc. Just food for thought!

We used PODS to move from DC - Arizona. We chose PODS because
- we didn't want to drive a Uhaul and our car/tow it
- we didn't want to drive a Uhaul
- 2 PODS were MUCH cheaper than a moving company
- it took about 6 days to get here (we spent two extra days sightseeing) and our PODS arrived about 4 days after we did!!
Drawbacks:
- We had to sell a few things (a couch, queen size bed frame) because they were too big for the length of the POD. We didn't have a lot of furniture at the time - if we did, we would have needed 3 PODS
- Wrap and pack EVERYTHING carefully to prevent damage from shifting during transport, including furniture
Thanks, everyone. I've actually never used a moving company (and neither has the bf), so we're fine with packing it up ourselves. Actually, I trust us to pack better then some moving companies, I think.
We might need two pods, but then, we don't really have that much stuff and I'm fine with getting rid of our bed and buying a new one once we get out there (the thing is so uncomfortable, it makes my back hurt).
We really want to do a little site-seeing, so driving in a truck isn't all that appealing. Ideally, I'd like to take at least a week to drive cross-country. And we'll have the dogs with us, so I'm not sure where they would go in a truck.
