Kids and permanent teeth
Permalink Closed

My six year old just showed me that she has some new teeth sprouting up behind her two front baby teeth. I'm really freaking out that she's going to have a major dental issue! I've never seen anything like this before and I'm not sure if these are indeed her permanent teeth or not. They do look like permanent teeth and look very nice together, but they are not where they should be!

I think six years old is a little young for getting permanent teeth if that is what they are, but then why didn't they come up under her baby teeth? I'll be making a dentist appointment for her on Monday, but I just can't help worrying until she sees the dentist.

She's maybe on the earlier side of normal, but I don't think it's freakishly early to be getting permanent teeth.  The dentist may want to pull the two baby teeth that are still hanging around to give the permanent teeth some room to move forward - teeth don't always come in right under the baby teeth they're supposed to replace unfortunately, sometimes just because they don't have enough room.

I would try not to worry yourself too much (easier said than done!) - she's got alot of growing left to do and teeth to be lost and gained before things are set for good.  And, she's totally going to be the envy of all of her classmates for losing teeth already!

My son is 6 and he's lost his bottom teeth a long time ago and has his adult teeth already in. He just lost his two top ones this month also. I've been told that when you see the adult teeth coming that the old ones should be out of the way so that they can come out the right way and not have anything blocking them. Are her top teeth lose at all? If you can get them off you should. Of course only if they are really lose. Biting on an apple helps to losen them a lot more. If not....she just may have a lot of teeth? My mom has told me that my brother had that problem and that they just had to pull those teeth out. He was growing more on top...I think behind his two front teeth.
I just took my son last month for a cleaning and the dentist told me he has a small mouth so his teeth will probably come out crooked. Sucks...cause he's baby teeth are so pretty and straight.
good luck....keep me posted

I'm late to reply but I agree about trying to pull out the baby teeth, if you can (if they're loose). My dentist had to pull 4 of my baby teeth when I was 10 or so, because the permanent teeth were coming in behind them. The ones he pulled weren't loose and had no intention of going anywhere anytime soon though. He said I was pretty old to still have baby teeth. I don't know what age you're supposed to loose them (can't remember), but I guess definitely before 10?

Well we did go to the dentist and it was confirmed that they are indeed her permanent teeth. The dentist would have pulled her front baby teeth right then and there, but he could tell she was already traumatized for just being there. She has two months to wiggle them so they will come out on her own or else they must be pulled.

So I guess I'm a little more relieved since the dentist didn't seem too concerned about it. Also nice to know that she still doesn't have any cavities!
