Low Carb Question
Permalink Closed

For the last week I've been trying to eat as few carbs as possible.  Considering I realized that's basically all I usually eat.  I still count my calories as always since I believe that's the only true way to lose weight and keep it off.  My question is, how many grams of carbs should be eaten in a day if your trying to lose a few pounds?  I've noticed some "low carb" things that say only 2g of carbs and stuff like that.  I'm just not sure how many I'm "allowed" to eat.  Any suggestions?

i'm not sure of the exact grams but i worked with a friend of mine who owned a Physicians Weight Loss for a while.  I would write down everything i ate during the week and she would analyze it for me and tell me what to do better.  Basically, i discovered that I LOVE BREAD AND PASTA!  so she told me to cut it down to 2 servings a day (instead of 5-7 like i was doing).  I did that and lost 4 pounds in a week and a half.  so i go by two servings and it works for me.  if i really need to take off some pounds, i dont eat any.

i hope that helps.  i know it didn't really answer your "grams" question- but it is what i go by and it really helps.

Well it depends on how low carb you want to be.  I think the daily recommended allowance for a 2000 calorie diet is 300 grams of carbs.  Southbeach and Atkins have their own recommended allowance based on their diets.  My bf does a modified version of low carbs because it is hard to try and follow Atkins every day and work and go to school.  He sticks with 150 carbs a day or less and loses weight pretty well when he sticks with it.  If you are only trying to lose a few pounds I would go with 150 grams or less and still eat your fruits and veggies and stuff so that way when you lose that weight and start eating more normally you won't gain all the carb-loss weight back which will happen.

Unless you have high sugar, focus more on counting calories.

Yeah, the important thing is to eat healthy carbs, whole grain carbs instead of sugary, starchy carbs.

in the beginning phase of atkins, i think they tell you to keep it to under 20 grams per day (which is hard to do).  if you were only having 2g of carbs, you couldn't eat anything other than meat.  everything has some carbs in it, including salad vegetables, cheese, etc.
