so i just checked the washing instructions on my down parka and it says, i swear to god, machine wash warm and tumble dry WITH SEVERAL CLEAN TENNIS BALLS. Is this some bizzarro Lucky joke, or has someone heard of this before?

I have heard of this before! Honestly. I think it is to even out the down so it doesn't get matted and clumpy. I could be way off here, but the whole tennis ball thing rings a bell with me.

Nope, I do that w/ my down vest.  Actually, I dry it most of the way normal, then add a single tennis ball.  It fluffs it up a bit and evens out the distribution of the down.

I usually dry it with an old shoe. As luckylily said, it fluffs it and distrubutes down. It's loud though.

When I wash my down pillows I usually dry them with a few tennis balls. That makes sense that a down jacket would need them.

I've also heard to do this if you're drying a bunch of towels or jeans. It distributes the heat better, and prevents your stuff from becoming one big, wet clump that's dry on the outside.

Well, I will definitely try it then... but I bet I will get some strange looks when I put everything in the drier at my laundromat!
