Grrrr, I hate the Midwest...
Permalink Closed

So I was supposed to go up to Minnesota today to do some shopping (Louis Vuitton, MOA, Ridgedale Center), but now I'm not because of the stupid weather.  They're expecting around 7 inches of snow up there right now, and since I live in Iowa and would have to drive up there, I can't because the roads will be bad.

I'm pissed because of the fact that I live in Iowa and there's NOTHING here, I have to travel to get to any decent stores, and because of the erratic weather here causes problems every time I want to travel.  Of course the weather is fine the days before and the days after when I wanted to travel.  This seems to happen everytime I plan something in advance; the weather screws up.

I'm also depressed that winter is like, 6 months long, so I feel that I'm held captive here during that 6 months.

I supposed I wouldn't mind living in the Midwest so much if I lived in a bigger city with stuff to do.  I could probably tolerate the weather if that was the case, although I hate winter and dream about living in a warm climate.

Okay, that's my rant.  I'm just kind of upset because I look forward to these one-day trips away, since my life consists of working 60 hours a week and I usually need a vacation after a certain point.  And since I hate living here, I'll do anything to get away.

I know I can't control the weather, but man, this sucks....

awww.. i'm really sorry carrie.  it sucks when things out of your control (like the weather) messes up your plans because then you really have no one to be mad at.

that said, can you reschedual?  today you should do something fun instead like go to the movies or go to a nice restaurant you normally wouldnt go to.  (think of all the money you saved not going shopping).

and of course, theres always the internet =)

Well, I've rescheduled to go on Monday, but I won't be going to Louis Vuitton then.  I pretty much refuse to do downtown Minneapolis driving by myself.  So I'm once again going to have to order from eluxury.com. I was so looking forward to going into the actual store too.

I would do internet shopping, but I actually don't like it that much.  I would much rather visit actual stores and see stuff in person.  I need to be able to try things on (since I'm picky about fit) and feel them, since a lot of web pictures can be deceiving of quality.  I also think my dislike for internet shopping has to do with the fact that that seems to be all I can do because the shopping here sucks, so I'm tired of it.  I want to be able to go to an actual B&M store.

Having a degree in fashion and having the huge interest in fashion that I have, living here is very stifling.

I've been building up a shopping urge too, so I'm about to explode and I was just so looking forward to today...sigh...  I'm going to go to the local mall and even though it sucks big time for shopping, I'm going to AE to look at a denim miniskirt that I've been eyeing.  It's on sale and I don't want to wait for Monday and not find it in my size then, so I'm just going to get it now while there are a lot of sizes left here...

I could go to KC, but I'm not really all that adventurous with driving into a city I don't know, by myself.  I've been up to MN a billion times, so I'm comfortable driving there.

Normally, I'd have a friend come with me or something, but everybody I know will be working or in class..

I feel your pain, I hate how snow affects traffic. In the future could you take a bus to Kansas city? My boyfriend and I take the bus to Boston just to save us the stress of driving. I actually have been dying to go to the city (we haven't been since August), but have been holding off 'cause of the freezing f-ing weather. I also hear ya about online shopping, I'm way too particular about fabrics (I too am a wicked toucher) and fit. Spring will be here soon. Think of it this way more time to save for and research what you want to buy.

Well, I've decided to hold off until next Friday, since my parents were willing to go then, which means they'll drive and I don't have to navigate downtown Minneapolis by myself.

I really hope that the weather forecase stays close to what it is at now, for then. I'm pretty much going to be unbearable to be around if I get my hopes up again, and then don't get to go because of weather, again.

Everybody pray to the weather-gods for me! I'm ready to do some damage to my checking account!

Carmen: You wanna sneak up into Cedar Point while you're home and take some photos of the new ride for me? Just to tide me over till I go in July?? LOL

Hi CarrieS--it's probably too late now, but next time try to go south to KC.  I lived there for many years (and still spend 2 months a year there) and it has fairly good shopping and is an extremely easy city to get around/drive in.

The major North/South interstate (I-35) will take you to all of the necessary exits/streets for good shopping.  I-35 to Broadway takes you directly to the Country Club plaza and I-35 North takes you to Zona Rosa, and I-35 South takes you to Oak Park Mall (good nordies, etc.).

If you ever decide to head south, let me know and I will give you a rundown of all the places you'll want to check out.

Carrie - glad to hear that you've re-scheduled the trip!  I guess there was a lot of snow down south of us (I live in Minneapolis) although it didn't reach downtown Mpls until late morning.  Like you, I'm hoping this weather improves fast b/c I'm sick of it!  Have fun next weekend!

p.s. driving in downtown Minneapolis is not all that bad.  It's laid out in a standard grid and most people drive pretty slow since they are from the suburbs and don't know where they are going.  Then of course, there are people like me who work and drive there everyday and get annoyed with the slowpokes!  I promise to be nice and not try to run anyone off the road next weekend in case you and your parents will be driving around

Jah: I might just do a KC trip sometime, to break away from the usual Minnesota shopping trips

Trixie:Thanks! (for not running me and my parents off the road ) My dad actually printed off a really detailed map of downtown Minneapolis, so if I really couldn't resist, I could probably find my way. It's so detailed, it names stores and such; I counted 4 Starbucks within a couple of blocks of Marshall Fields! Yeah, I don't like making other drivers mad 'cause I don't know where I'm going, probably because I yell at people here for doing the same thing!

Carmen: That's cool, you'll be near CP when i'm there

Thanks guys! I think it bothered me so much about not going because I kind of hate where I live, because there's nothing to do or see, and the weather sucks. I've calmed down since yesterday and will hopefully get to go this next week.

Someday my dream of living on the West Coast will come true (I'll take earthquakes over blizzards, extreme hot and cold temps, tornadoes, etc.).....

Hey CarrieS - I hope you make it up here for some fun shopping. That snowstorm yesterday was bad, today the roads are clear and it's 40 degrees.
Trixie is right about Mpls. downtown, it is very easy to get around. Really, all you need are directions to the downtown Marshall Fields, park in their ramp (at the Radisson) and you can walk anywhere from there. Downtown Minneapolis is pretty small and most of the shopping is within a few blocks of the Marshall Fields on Nicollet Mall.
Ridgedale (only 10 miles from my house) is on a main road and so is MOA, so you shouldn't worry about getting around.
regards. Janet (conet)

Yeah, downtown in any big city scares the crap out of me (for driving), but you girls are making it sound not bad, so I might to venture it alone sometime. I just like to know where I'm going...

As far as Ridgedale, I've been there a couple of times before, so I know I can get there without worry and I've been to MOA enough times, I could probably get there with my eyes closed! LOL

I'm just going to stalk the weather online for the next week, so I hope it stays where it's at right now, which is predicted to be 35 degrees, 20% chance of precip. Everyone cross your fingers!

Thanks again for letting me rant!
