to buy, or not to buy? -- that is the question

So... I'm in love with the Stephen Sprouse Neverfull bag by Louis Vuitton. I want to buy it, but the only way I could afford it is by charging it. It costs approx $1400, which is more than a month's rent for me. My birthday is coming up (in a little over a week), so I have some justification to get it. But... I was really trying to pay down my cc debt. Can anyone enable me to get it, or give me the smack upside the head that I clearly need? Thanks!

Heres a pic:

Don't get it.  You will regret charging it to your Credit Card.  Save the money and then buy it if you really like it.  In a year from now when you are still paying off credit card debt you will be mad about the debt.  Please don't do it!

Don't do it if you don't have the money.

You already know it's a bad idea and just need to be talked out of it. So don't do it!
If you're still tempted, figure out how long it would take you to pay it off based on interest rate etc and calculate what the ultimate cost of the bag is. If you can't afford it at $1400, you definitely can't afford it at whatever $ you'll ultimately pay - that will make it much less appealing.

IMO it's not classic enough for me, I couldn't see myself wearing it for years to come like a plain monogram neverfull or a speedy. But that's also just me. I've never been able to pull the trigger on a bag that costs over 1K (or over $300 for that matter), I'm too fickle when it comes to bags, I want at least one new bag a season and I rarely re-wear old bags unless I'm going to an event.

I'm a big advocate of not buying something you can't afford outright; if you gave it some time and still loved it, could you save up for it? Usually when I think about charging something that costs more than my rent, that gives me enough of a reality check to not do it. Or if I think about whether I would regret buying this if I lost my job tomorrow (for me the answer is always "yes").

I HATE when I fall in love with something expensive. I usually don't end up buying whatever it is but I stalk it obsessively!

BTW happy birthday for next week!

Smack, smack, smack. Keep aspiring. You'll get there. I like Twinkle Star's suggestion of saving up for it -- maybe eat canned soup for lunch instead of going out, cut your own hair, give up chai lattes, and put the money into a bag fund. Then when you get it, you'll not only see a bag you love but a financial accomplishment!

I agree completely. If you really want it, then put a little bit aside each month for it and save up. When you finally have enough $$, if you still want it, then go for it. But definitely DON'T charge it.

You should save up for it, imo. Going into debt for a bag is not worth it!

PLEASE DON'T use your credit card for a $1400 bag! If you really love it now, save up the money for it, and see if you still love it that much when you need to use your actual money.

agreed.  don't do it.  step away from the computer.  in all seriousness though and personally, i agree with twinkle star in that it is not classic enough for me to spend that kind of dough.  i'd at least wait until you have the $ saved up and then evaluate whether you still want it or not.  jmo.

I also agree that it's not classic enough to justify the money, in my opinion. And it's certainly not a good idea to put it on a credit card, even if you think it's worth the money. If you love, love, love it, then pay off your credit card first and then start saving up. Once you've saved up the cash, if you still love it, then get it. By that time, you might find that you don't love it, in which case you'll then have your credit cards paid off, plus $1,400 in cash to spend on something else!

Thanks ladies! I talk a good game, but I don't think I'd even be able to plunk down $1400 on a bag when it came time to pull the trigger. Not to mention my husband would have me committed. I haven't seen the bag in person, so I actually might hate it, but there's something very appealing to me about the crazy bright flowers over the very staid monogram style. I'll put aside my b'day money and them save up each month. Provided they don't sell out, maybe I'll get one in a couple (or 6) months.

Thanks for all your help with this!
