I'm trying to not spend money because I need to finance a 3 week trip to France in May but I am also already worrying about what I'm going to pack. I got this skirt which I thought would be good for my trip because I could bum around in it in France with a tank and flats and bring a pair of gold sandals and dress it up for evenings. Plus I won't have to worry about ironing it and I can just rinse it out in the sink and hang it to dry.

So.....definitely a worth-while purchase, right???

I think it's justifiable.  I bought the same skirt and I haven't worn it yet but I love it.  I think it's a good travel piece because it's low maintenance and can be dressed up or down.

YES!! I bought that a couple weeks ago and can't wait to wear it. It would be awesome for travel since it is supposed to be wrinkled, plus -a gorgeous neutral- it will go with everything and look great. (I love that it has an elastic waistband.)

Thanks for helping my justify this! If I could I would probably buy a whole new wardrobe for this trip because I'm visiting a boy so you know, I want to look cute even though my hair will be a disaster since I won't have my flatiron and hardcore hair dryer to keep things in check.

Karina - it has an elastic waist band but it didn't seem all that stretchy, although it's hard for me to tell because the smallest size was actually a teeny bit big on me so I didn't really test how much the waist can stretch. It might be a good choice though because it's a circle skirt so it's not at all fitted and it does have the drawstring.

lynnie - I don't have all my plans set yet but I'm going to stay with my friend in Tours for around 8 nights, which should be awesome and kind of weird because I've only met him a few times and we really only know each other through correspondence. He said we can rent a car and visit the castles in the Loire Valley. After that I wanted to head to Belgium for a few days because I wrote my thesis on Netherlandish art. Then I hope to spend the last 5 days or so in Paris.

Cricket, it's from American Eagle and it's around $44. It's silk and machine-washable.
I don't see it on the site anymore but they have a printed version, and they had a lot of the brown ones in the store that I went to.

Tours?! I adore Tours, I lived there for a summer. A quick tip-- check and see when the music festivals in France are. The one in Tours is soo much fun and there were some great bands. However, it is usually in June, but check it out anyway.


By the way, that skirt is adorable and perfect for traveling.

OOHHH that sounds like so much fun!  I really wish I had a chance to go to Paris but I had class during the week.  That skirt should be perfect but I also recommend bringing lots of layers- it may not be as warm as you're expecting.  I was in the south of france from the end of may to the second week of June.  I only brought one pair of jeans, one sweatshirt jacket, and a light twill jacket, as well as a bunch of skirts, tanks, and tees.  Well some nights I would wear the sweatshirt, the jacket, and the jeans and I was still cold!  Maybe bring some light long sleeve shirts for layering.  Although, it will be 100 degrees the whole time if you prepare for the cold

Oooooh, I did the trip around the Loire Valley!  My French host family had an RV and we basically drove around the different castles.  It is awesome!  make sure you also do wine tasting!

do you get into Dutch realism? I love Jan van Eyck's Giovanni Arnolfini and His Bride (at The National Gallery in London) -  I'd have to say this is my favorite painting because I love Dutch realism and love all the symbolism in that painting - it's just plain cool...

ok - now on to your hair - why can't you take a flat iron? I have an inexpensive Conair ceramic dual voltage that I take with me to Europe (I fried an expensive flat iron in Vienna using a voltage converter - so I always take dual voltage dryers and flat irons with me because you can't trust those converters)


here's the flat iron (it's not all fancy schmancy but it works well, and that's all that matters, right?)

This has turned into an awesome travel thread!

lynnie - good call, I will need to bring warm things for the evening. I was getting kind of paranoid because I really hate the heat and normally travel to Europe in the winter plus I kept thinking about that horrible heatwave they had the other year in France.

Amelie - I'll ask my friend about the festival. I'm supposed to be leaving Tours on June 2nd but things are still up in the air. The friend that I'm visiting is actually a medieval music scholar doing a post-doctoral fellowship so I'm sure he's up on all the musical events in the area.

detroit - Well I could bring my flat iron and I probably will wind up packing it but my reasons for not bringing one are 1) I am an obsessively light packer and it's going to be tough to fit 3 weeks worth of stuff in my small suitcase, 2) since I'm staying with this boy for part of the trip I don't want to waste our precious time straightening my hair when we could be out frolicking in Tours, 3) since I'm staying with this boy I don't want him to think I'm horribly high maintenance (reverse vanity! I'd rather have my hair look like crap) and 4) My hair is usually such a mess in the summer that I really need both a heavy duty dryer AND a flat iron to fix it.
But thanks for the info on the cheap dual voltage irons! I think I might get one of those.

Oh and yes I am really into early Netherlandish art. I adore van Eyck and the one time I was in London I wound up spending almost all my time at the National Gallery in that wing of the museum and hardly saw anything else! I wrote my thesis on Jan Gossaert who is a much-maligned painter from the late 15th-early 16th c. I am so torn because I want to have a decent amount of time in Paris but I also am dying to get to Brugge and Ghent.
