Question about wine
Permalink Closed

Maybe some of you winos can help me out confuse

I have to bring wine to my office party.  There will be about 20 people.  It is just an afternoon of heavy hors dvoeuvres and drinks.  I figure I should bring white and red.  However, I didn't know what the best overall option would be.  I was thinking either Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay for white and Pinot Noir or Merlot for the red.

But, I am not a big wine drinker or know what is the most socially appropriate.  I also thought I would get some advice on how many bottles to get for 10-12 drinkers....probably only a couple of glasses each.  It is just a really informal afternoon cocktail hour.

So, what would you do?

if it were me, i'd bring chardonnay and cabernet.  i have no explanation, but that's what i'd bring :)

is wine the only alcohol being served?  if you get the normal 750ml bottle, it has about 4-5 glasses.  a magnum will double that.

I would probably bring a Merlot for the red and a Sauvignon Blanc for the white. Both are relatively smooth and light. You don't want something heavy like a Cabernet, I think of Cabs of wines to eat with red meat dinners- like a roast beef type dinner.

I've also really gotten into Chianti. It's a little heavier than you might want for an afternoon drink, but I really enjoy them. If you go this route, make sure you get a bottle that has a pink label around the neck of the bottle and that there's a black rooster on that label. That's how you will actually know that it's a true Chianti from the Chianti region in Italy.

I think you should go out on a limb a bit and something a bit different - for the red, I'd go with a Malbec from the Mendoza region of Argentina (you can find this at any BevMo or even your grocery store), and for the white maybe a pinot grigio and a sauvignon blanc? Or you could do a sparkling Italian white - like Prosecco.

Ohhh, Malbec! I really enjoy Malbecs as well. I totally forgot about them.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I would plan on two glasses per person, so, 40 servings, so, eight to ten bottles.

Ditto Sauvignon Blanc for the white. Some people (e.g. moi) don't like the heavy, buttery, oaky taste of Chardonnays.
