From what I recall there were not many ATMs but that was a few years ago, and it may have changed, but I'm thinking not... I remember us taking cash and travelers checks (AAA provides travelers checks without fees to members in case you are a member) having it exchanged at a bank (go to a bank to exchange for the best rate.)  Credit cards are good too - but you will need cash for most stuff.  I usually bring very little cash and use ATM's and credit cards when I travel, but Tahiti is an exception - it's not extremely developed for the most part.)  here's something from the fodor's forum - you may want to post there and ask for more current info than I have http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=3
